battery drain

Posted By: cubx On: 11-20-2009 @ 15:24:38         Reply | Edit
Since ive had the car its hesitated while starting. The guy the sold it to me said he thought it needed a starter. Now sometimes it would start fine, other times it would struggle.

Last Saturday I went out in the car and things were normal. Monday I get in, turn the key and I get nothing! The battery is dead. So dead, that I couldnt even jump start it. So I replaced the battery with a used battery. It wouldnt start the car. So i had it charged and things were fine for the evening. I could turn the car on, the shut it off and start it up again with now problems.

I went out an hour ago and all i get is the door bell. Nothing else. I've checked my amp, that doesnt appear to be staying on and all my lights are off.

I don't think its the alt, mainly because my mothers 89 grand am had a bad alt and you've have to rev the car at lights to keep it running. That isnt the case with the bird.

I'm gonna borrow my friends battery charger tonight and leave a few things undone and see if i can get it to start after a few hours off the charger.

Oh also when i close the headlights, one of them seems to grind for about 10 seconds. A friend of mine thinks that may be causing the drain ?

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

this is on a 94 Fb 3.4l

Autozone (and probably other stores) test alternators for free just to guarantee that its not the alternator.

If it isn't then something is shorted or staying on... check the quality of your positive cables maybe some insulation rotted/rubbed off and its touching metal somewhere.

If you think its the headlights, then just unplug the headlight controller module. Its tucked in somewhere near the headlight support at the front drivers side of the car. It looks like this Since they work this is probably not the problem but you could test it anyway.

Advance tested the battery and alt. Both checked out ok. They had me shut the car of, which I knew was a mistake. So I had to be jumped. They said it sounds like I need a new starter. But can a starter really pull enough juice to kill a freshly charged battery?

To kill the battery you'd have to run the starter for quite some time and I'm pretty sure in that case you'd know thats why the battery died. The only way your starter would be doing what you describe would be if the solenoid is leaking current.

You need to get a multimeter and check the current draw from your battery when the car is off to get a better idea of what is going on.

If jumping it works, then its not the starter...I second the possibility of bad wires.

Voltage drop or parasitic draw on the battery.
