wanting 300-400 hp in my 1998 firebird V6

Posted By: shanem85 On: 11-21-2009 @ 11:56:40         Reply | Edit
I very recently bought a 1998 firebird with a V6 auto. Any suggestions on how to get 300-350 HP without getting to deep in the pocket or having to do alot of work on the engine(like now heads and pushrods, etc)? Wont mind spending 2 grand in the project at most.

Don't mind the fags.

Turbo charge it and tune it. I actually have a kit sitting here at my house if you were interested in buying it. You would have to fabricate a downpipe, and probably get some bigger injectors.

You can also get a good cam from Lance Abbot, and get a good tune and come close to 300 crank, probably closer to 270-280ish with that and a good tune, and still be below your 2k budget. When you go turbo, you will find you a lot of small things that will add up in a hurry.

Not for $2k he isnt..hehe.

The only way to get the power you want is $$$. You can add a 100shot of nitrous and have it tuned by someone who knows what they are doing. The complete setup for nitrous will be a little under a grand, but a good quality dyno tune on the nitrous will run $500+ and you may want a wide band O2 sensor to monitor that tune when you run the nitrous.

I'd say take Mike's idea and maybe do a decent cam and there are some guys selling long tube headers for around $750. If you have someone install the cam, it will take about $1000 with the cam, upgraded valvetrain, and labor. Then you will want that tuned as well.

Another route might be a used powerdyne supercharger.

maybe i mislead some people and sorry if i did. I would have only around 2 grand to spend at first but will have more money coming every 2 weeks. no nitrous though... want to spend around 5 or 6 grand total on the engine, just not all at once.

Jer, you can do a turbo for less than 2k! depends on how well your fabrication skills are, and if you don't mind using parts that are used.

Honestly Shane, I think you would get what you want with a good N/A Abbott cam, FFF longtubes (don't know if they are still making them though) a good tune, and maybe some P&P. Do you know if Pat and Tiago are still making the long tubes Jeremiah? And I'm in the same boat on the nitrous. To me it is just to much of a shock on the parts to be worth it.

Sarav, how hard is it to follow Nietzsche? I read Machiavelli's The Prince earlier this year, and the only thing that was clear was to not trust mercenary infantry while fighting on the peninsula.

Remote mount setup, considering smaller turbo for quick spool
http://www.turboelements.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=16

700$ with internal wastegate.

Intercooler http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CXRacing-Intercooler-Front-Mount-240sx-S14-S13-SRT4-B18_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem3a520bc7beQQitemZ250484606910QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

79.00

Piping from Summit around 500 bucks.

BOV 200$. That is if you get a higher end BOV, the Bosch BOV's cost about 40 bucks and work very well.

Mr Gasket build your own gasket kit $30 at most from Autozone to block off PCV.

FPR from BBK $66.55

And lets say $300 for misc lines, oiling, etc.

As long as you stay around 7psi of boost, you should be around 280hp with about 90% duty cycle on injectors. With room for improvement I might add.

What do we have? A decent home brewed turbo system for $1875 and some change.

You can't claim half ass setup, as I said before, it depends on the person's fabrication skills.

^ the rule of thumb on these projects is to double what you think it will take..because it will happen. Then if you want to do it right, its $500+ for a good dyno tune.

You can "list" what it will cost all you want.

But I promise you, That number is a complete hoax.

Ask anyone who has actually done it.

edit: Anyways, I suggest you save you money, keep the sixer stock and save up for an LS1. Stock they dyno 300rwhp(M6), which is what you asked for.
