Oil Everywhere!

Posted By: cubx On: 11-20-2009 @ 00:35:39         Reply | Edit
Well I just went to start the car to see if it was making the noise i heard it making early. I took it around the block and started smelling oil. When I got home, i opened the hood and oil was everywhere! Keep in mind I know a fair amount about cars, but that is limited.

I looked down and near the oil filter something round that is about as big around as a quarter. It's burst and sprayed oil. What is this? How major is the problem?

Figured it out. It was the oil pressure switch.

Didn't fix the car though. I now have a loud valve tap, the engine overheats, even after a radiator flush and im the oil pressure gauge isn't moving. I really hope this isn't too bad, I really don't have much money right now.

I think something is pluging ur oil system, thus the valve noise and burst filter. I don't know much more anout ur cooling problem if ur don't provide more info

as far as the cooling problem goes, I think the radiator needs to be cleaned again. I drained and cleaned it, then refilled it. I did this after I replaced the oil pressure switch/sensor and refilled the engine with oil.

I started the car and let it run for a few minutes to let things circulate. The car was puffing white smoke for a few and then the smoke cleared. I go back in the car, the temp gauge was in the red, the oil pressure wasn't registering and I had a valve tap. I hope I've not screwed something else up.

If you use the cheapo oil pressure sensors, that is your problem. Get a genuine AC Delco part for that man. You can try ohming out the sensor while the car is in the run position but not started, then also with the car running. Let me know what it reads if you try this. All in all, if you get no oil pressure reading even after replacing the oil pressure sensor, it is more than likely the sending unit. Which is a pain in the ass....

Hate to say it, but it might be time to pay for a chemical flush on your cooling system. The chemicals used aren't readily accessible to your average shade tree mechanic. Also, like I posted in your other thread, SEAFOAM that bitch!

Ok. I'm gonna have it towed in and have the shop take a look at this things. When I lived with my grandparents I had every tool under the sun. Thank you for the advice, I make sure I mention this stuff to them, so they don't waste any time.

Now if all this fails and I need a new engine, would I need to upgrade much to just go up to the 3.8 from the 3.4? I'm happy with the lil sixer, but a little more power couldn't hurt either :-)

The shop looked at the car Friday afternoon. They said I have a rod tap and that I need a new engine. So I have been surfing car-part.com and have found a couple of 3.4s. I'd love to go 3.8, but I've read in several places that some things would need upgraded along with the engine. So for now, I just need to get the car on the road.

Sucks to hear man. I would call around and see if a local mechanic could source you one. Might be cheaper than paying for the shipping on a motor from Car-part, and plus you might be able to have the mechanic check the motor over before it is installed.

Now would be a good time to find a decent 3.4 and throw a bigger cam in it before it goes into the car.

A 3.8 swap wouldn't really be that great for you at the moment anyways. Just get the bastard on the road and enjoy it! Let us know if you need anymore help bro!

Found an engine. The best I can find right now and local is 103k for $500. To me, this isn't to bad. Hell I'm having to borrow $ to get the darn thing.

For now, its just gonna be swap n go. Id love to have some upgrades, but I need my car asap.

I hope to having it up and running in 2 weeks.

Thanks for the info.
