I have a 96 conv. firebird 3.8ltr 5 speed with dual exhaust. It is completely stock. The clutch needs replacement and I will be working off of jack stands. Is there anything special about performing this operation or is it standard GM? Can it be done off the ground or do you absolutely need a lift? I know the bell housing is tight to the firewall, does this create a problem getting to the bolts? What about the stock dual exhaust? Thanks for your help!

I did mine (on my 97 v6 camaro) with a floor jack, 2 jackstands, and an extra set of hands.

Have lots of 3/8th extensions handy lol. That top bolt on the bellhousing is a PITA to get to. Also, replace your slave cylinder while you are in there. It is about 110 bucks, dealer item I think. Just take your time with it! -- NIHILIST AND PROUD! F*CK IT ALL! [ Edited on 04/28/2009 @ 10:19:51 ]

You can't remove the T-5 bellhousing without removing the whole transmission unfortunately. -- NIHILIST AND PROUD!

So are you saying that the trans and bell housing have to come out together as a unit and not separately?

Yeah, it has to come out as a complete unit. I found the most time consuming part is getting the input shaft loose. Sometimes corrosion can build up around it, and thats when a prybar on the bellhousing helps out quite a bit. -- NIHILIST AND PROUD!
