Mystery coolant leak

Posted By: camaropower On: 03-21-2010 @ 16:13:33         Reply | Edit
Hey everyone! Quick question if anyone can help, I'm having a coolant leak and I'm not sure exactly where its from? Car is a 1997 3.8 v6 35th anniv. I've checked the radiator (but not the very bottom of it), the hoses, the thermostat housing, and the water pump. Its losing it cause I can smell it, and have to add more every once in a while because the temp gauge will start rising (but never go past 225) and falling. Any ideas on where and what to check?

I have a stupid question. Is the reason why u think u have a leak because u can smell coolant? Have u checked your coolant? Might be a heater core

I smell coolant after I shut the car off. I felt the floorboard on the pass. side and didn't notice it ever being wet if that means anything? I remember in my 88 camaro I used to have it went bad and the floorboard was soaked

I can hear coolant boiling after I shut the car off too, and notice that it is losing coolant and that I have to add more, or the temperature gauge will start fluctuating

My leak was right at the thermostat, but you couldn't really tell it just by looking. I know that sounds weird but take a closer look.

Ok I will double check it this afternoon. I was thinking about going ahead and replacing the thermostat anyway. Thank you for the suggestion!

Ok today I found coolant, it was pooled up by the intake/top of the waterpump, and it was running down the left side of the waterpump. Does that mean waterpump? Or intake??

isnt the weephole on top of the waterpump...if you take the belt off and can move the waterpump pully for and aft then its likely worn out and causing said issue...pics always help...

Well since the car has 128k I decided to go ahead and change the water pump and thermostat, but I'm not thinking that the problem was either of the two. The pulley wiggled only a slight amount. Is it possible it is coming from the intake gasket or head gasket?

Doubt that it would leak out of the engine if that was the case

The waterpump had a slight amount of movemet in it, didnt seem like much. The new one didn't have any at all tho so hopefully that was the problem. If not I guesss I'll have to look into changin the intake gasket

I am trying to figure out what's wrong with it and trying to fix it lol. If I replace those two parts (which at 128k miles probably couldn't hurt anyway) I don't have to worry about that being the problem and/or don't have to worry about them failing

My next move is changing the intake gasket. The leak hasn't stopped, and you can see coolant on the engine block above the water pump

the coolant temp sensor is right up there, could be leaking there, also the throttle body to intake gasket leaks on my car, but it uses a tiny inverted torx bit that i dont have on the end of the studs, mine always turn when i go to spin the nut off of them...id start with the easy stuff first...doing the intake is no fun...

So I opened it up today, and it was the upper intake manifold gasket. Since its already apart tho I'm changing the lower intake manifold gasket as well, changing the plugs and wires, oil and filter (of course lol) and valve cover gaskets
