i figured the v6 forum could use some activity.
well, for about a month now when my car gets to opperating temp i begin to smell coolant. i dont think its the heater core because i dont smell it from the passanger side under the dash at all. i've even dyed the system and been all over the car looking for a leak. anywho for a month now ive been smelling what im guessing is coolant burning off from the valley where the head and intake meets on the drivers side. the car isnt growing oil so its not going there. on top of that even after a month of this it hasnt lost enough coolant to cause the car to overheat, or even appear to be low coolant.
there is slight moisture on the driver side where the intake and head meet, so that's my guess. its hard to tell tho because the fuel rail is in the way.
has anyone else had this happen?
also i guess i should make a list of what i need to do the job:
upper and lower intake gaskets
rtv
injector o-rings --

Have they been changed before? How many miles are on your car? I haven't seen that happen on a 3.8 yet but on the 60 degree engines that was a common problem. I had one on a 3.1 beretta that always smelled like that but you could only actually see seepage when it was really cool outside. Eventually it got worse and I fixed it.
If taking off the intakes is no big deal to you (which it really isn't) and you can afford the gaskets then just do it... otherwise it doesn't seem like a big enough problem to worry about (yet).

the car has a little over 100k on it, the gaskets are original. it isnt a big deal for me to do it, i just dont want to do it for nothing. i have dyed the cooling system but dont actually see where any of it is coming from or going.
i guess im going to keep driving it for now, but the smell of burning coolant tends to become very annoying. --
