plugged in the scanner

i realized as of late i have had slightly lower gas mileage than usual. more like 23mpg as opposed to a couple weeks ago when i was getting 26. i have not done any modifications to the car since the 26mpg and have not noticed any drivability issues, idles fine, runs fine.
so today i snagged the snap on scanner from work and took it home with me, i plugged it in on the way and was reading sensors and such as i drove. everything seemed to be in check. fuel trim was damn near perfect at -2 to +2 both short term and long term at a steady cruising speed. the o2 sensors were doing what they are supposed to. ran a misfire monitor got no misses. checked codes, came up with nothing. A/F ratio and timing seem to be in check. No knock retardation.
so i get bored and do a couple 3rd gear pulls, watching the A/F and Knock sensor and fuel trim. the A/F went fat, about 12:1 when on it hard. i had 1 degree of knock retard for a split second (on 87 octane). And the fuel trims didnt go crazy. Of course that all was just for fun.
so i get home and pull in the driveway reading the sensors again at idle. looking over again and again wondering wtf it could be. then, all of a sudden, i see the MAP sensor was only reading about 9Hg...ok its windy but it should still be near 30. i popped the hood looking for a vacuum leak or anything of that nature, found nothing. the sensor was plugged in all the way. so i flicked it a few times. went back in the car and it was reading 29Hg...so i guess i need a map sensor. i dont want to go anything but gm and all the places are closed for the night already. i saw on gm parts direct it goes for $44 there, and since the dealership in town gives me 10% over cost on parts im guessing it will be close to that.
has anyone else run into map sensor issues like this? i would hate to dump 40+ bucks on a sensor that cant be returned and doesnt fix my problem. Thanks. --

map sensor= manifold absolute presure
it monitors the amount of air pressure in the manifold which allows the car to know the engines air mass flow rate which then goes to the ecu and allows the ecu to adjust the fuel flow accordingly.
storn: i didnt think the wind would matter? the MAP should be equal to the barometric pressure which i'm pretty sure relies on temperature altitude and possibly humidity?
unless you live on the top of a mountain i don't think 9 hg is normal...especially at WOT -- i rock.

its a snap on scanner from work, i think its the step just under Solus model if im correct, they probably dont make it anymore, it is limited on use for cars newer than 05, such as getting into air bag modules or even transmissions, but for our cars it will do a hell of a lot. --
