hey guys new to the site but definently not new to motors nor new to f bodies. this is my second 4th generattion camaro and my buddy has a firebird that i work on quite a bit.
sometimes while driving my rpm's drop really low just for a second and the battery gauge drops down to like 81/2 or 9 volts and then kicks right back up but only at idle or at low low speeds mostly when turning the wheel or putting it into reverse from drive. and my headlights and dash lights dim. any ideas? thank you

Do you have an aftermarket stereo? The alternator could be on its way out. -- 2005 GMC 1500HD 6.0L, 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix

No i bought the car about a month and a half ago and the guy had an aftermarket cd changer and XM thing that didnt even work so i ripped it all out but there was no wires that i snipped so i know there isnt a short. and ive come to realize that it only does it when i turn the wheel real fast and when the car is warm. this is a 2000 and i have owned a 1999 and this kind of thing is all new to me

^ I'd start there, then bring your car to a shop that will test the alternator for free...but it is normal for the voltage to drop some when returning to idle, but not 8-9 volts. -- 2005 GMC 1500HD 6.0L, 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix

Okay thank you guys I'm gonna probably get both my battery and my alternator tested and then go from there i think it might be my battery but I'm not sure. and i found out that it only does it when the car is hot and when the steering wheel is being turned at a stop.

My car does the same thing, I still haven't got around to looking for the cause since I just replaced the fuel pump and still need to replace the cat or tune it out. Time for an oil change and transmission filter and fluid too. Fuck high mileage. --

Yeah I'd get that checked out before you wind up stranded because of a dead battery or alternator. There is a chance it could be a bad ground somewhere too. -- 2005 GMC 1500HD 6.0L, 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix

Autozone can check out all of that. The most telling thing seems to be amperage output. Usually people come in and say they loose some power with lights or what not. I check the alternator with the motor at 2000rpm and all electronics in the vehicle on, and voltage can be decent while amperage might only be 15% of what it should be. -- 1982 Z28, 383, D-1SC intercooled @ 10psi, trick flow heads, solid roller cam, 3.73's, stall
