Okay, I just bought a 3.8 with 11k miles, came with a T5, PCM and all the goodies.
now, if mike will ever manage the snow, i need to get my hands on a turbo kit.
so for the questions...
1. How much boost on a stock bottom end?
2. Cam?
3. i dunno
Kevo, patrick, help? --

It can handle tons of boost as long as you stay on top of the tune...get a wbo2 also. Most like to stay around 10-12 on the stock bottom end, some venture around 15. If you want a cam, get a cam. -- **FOR SALE** 2005 GMC 1500HD 6.0L, dumped true duals - Flowmaster 50 series - 16.43@85.29

You can certainly run 15 lbs of boost on a stock engine. Others have already done it successfully. The trick is that you have to stay on top of both fuel/delivery and tuning. Most people want to take it pretty safely to around 10 to 12 lbs though.
Yes a turbo cam will certainly give you more horsepower than your stock cam would give you. Just exactly what kind of specs you will need is getting into the nitty gritty details. What you first need to hammer out is just exactly how much horsepower/torque you want to make.
Rest assured....boost is like crack...its an addiction!!! You can never get enough.
Beware of your T5 though....they dont typically like more than 400 rwhp without some serious modifications.
When I had my old turbo on my car I was putting out close to 350 rwhp and that was a Garrett T3/T4 hybrid turbo. I would imagine that you could expect some similar numbers, maybe a little weaker....as I had minor engine work at that time as well. -- Why in the world would I ever want to downgrade to a V8?

my goal is 350hp really max. i still want to retain streetablility without fubaring parts left and right.
im gonna leave the wicked HP to my LS powered truck for now.
but im sure ill get the itch for more once i start.
ill have the 3.8 that ive got now, so i may build it as time goes. i couldnt pass up a V6/T5/Pcm and all goodies for $750 especially when its only got 11k miles.

That wont be hard to attain at all especially if that 350 horsepower is at the engine. If you want that 350 horses at the ground you are probably going to need to start looking to upgrade your fuel injectors to GrandPrix GTP injectors and upgrading your fuel pump....but its not a neccessity. Otherwise a good tune and a turbosystem will put you right where you want to be. Oh yeah, 92/93+ octane is a must and 100% synthetic oil will work miracles!! -- Why in the world would I ever want to downgrade to a V8?

high octane isnt nice to the wallet but its a price i gotta pay.
350 @ the motor...300/wheels is around where i wanna be.
I run Mobil 1 oil now, and i love it. I just changed it after another 15000 miles.
Im definitely gonna switch to regular synthetic when it goes FI.
Im not sure what all mike has in his kit he wants to sell, but i was wondering about everyones take on variable boost controllers. so i dont have to run a ton all the time. --

Cool! Sounds like an easy enough task!
It used to be incredibly hard for us to be able to make 300 rwhp....now your going to do it in "1 shot, 1 kill".

lol thats the plan. i went and looked at a Badass 62 nova today...really want it, but i thing SG deserves a turbo.
since im going to have a complete, almost new motor, what should i do to it besides a cam? i dont wanna tie up a sh*tload of money into it becasue ill most likely build the one ive got now. --

Well the minor engine work that I had done was with those SLP Rockers. Thats about all I could get to without really needing to take the engine apart.
People say the cam can be taken out and a new one put in without removing the engine but Ive never done it nor have I seen anyone else do it.
Saddly on a stock engine its not recommended that you have both a cam and rockers. I was able to do it on mine because as I rebuilt my engine it was altered to be able to handle all of that extra lift. You are going to need to choose between one or the other and the cam is going to be the obvious correct choice. I would say a good turbo cam would net you more than 30 rwhp easy and those rockers, at least naturally aspirated, will net you about an 8 rwhp gain...of course that will depend on how much other work you have done to the car as well. I have no idea how much rwhp would be gained using SLP rockers and forced induction....sorry, we didnt measure it. -- Why in the world would I ever want to downgrade to a V8?
