I need help, I just bought a 1998 firebird , it is auto, I have nothing done to it, except I bought some ws-6 wheels and put new tires on them. I just would really like some experienced input before I go put anything into my car. What should I start with?

Thanks,
Ricky

look in that thread for links...

modding 101--BRIEEEF summary. more air in + efficient combustion + more air out (faster)=power.

so one of the first things you want to do is exhaust. headers and a catback exhaust system (stay away from flowmasters imo)

then intake stuff...cold air intake k&n filter and a whisper lid

then we'll go from there.

This is what I have so far..

Please let me know if theres anything I should change. For the moment I am aiming at spending about a grand.

(includes shipping)
Pacesetter headers - 232.56
80 series dual flowmaster exhaust - 298.00
Whisper Lid - 139.95
Whisper ram air kit - 139.95

DO I NEED A HIGH FLOW CAT?
Magnaflow HF cat - 65.10

Total:
865.56 - roughly 1000.00 for installation stuff.

Let me know what you all think.

Thanks,
Ricky

flows better. flowmaster can sound a bit better, but if youre getting headers too, then the magnaflow will sound great.

pick up a highflow cat. as long as the whole exhaust is being swapped out, you might as well throw one on there. if you decide you want it afterwards, it will cost a lot to put on (assuming you dont do it yourself).

Magnaflow is better than Flowmaster becuase of this:

Flowmaster is a chambered muffler, meaning the muffler itself has chambers (sections) inside it. The more chambers, the quiter the muffler and more power loss.

Magnaflow is a straight-thru muffler, meaning no chambers. Its not as loud, but you'll see more power gains from it, and its not as raspy up top as the Flows.

As for cat-backs in general, they're pretty much all the same. The only differences are some are made out of aluminumized steel, and others are made out of stainless steel. The rest of it is in the muffler.

Or, if you're not sure, just get a cutout. $60 all together. $30 for the cutout, and about $30 for labor. It was my favorite mod on my sixxer

My firebird is in the shop right now getting body work/paintjob[black]..

And I need a new set of front directional[turn signal] lights.

I think I am just going to buy aftermarket ones from a local store and modify them..

So, can anybody please tell me the diameter of the front directional lights on a 98-02 v6 firebird? Would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Ricky

Hey guys, another question. I have an automatic transmission.. In simplistic terms, how do I make it less sucky? I see alot of B&M stuff? I was also told about transgo.

BTW: It's a 98' 3.8 firebird.

Posted By: goldenphoenix On: 11-07-2007 @ 22:38:06     Reply | Top | Edit
If your asking in reference to the sucky effect that it has on your horsepower loss (20% to 25%)then not very much aside from going through the tedious work of switching to a manual. Just remember that all the fastest cars are automatics.

If you were asking in reference to not having very much seat of the pants action you can always add components from those companys, add corvette servos. The harder/volatile the shift the easier it is on your tranny....thats the general rule. Changing out small components in the transmission will make a night and day difference in the way your car performs...just not so much due to horsepower.

I do have an automatic transmission that has been rebuilt. I dont know exactly what was done to it because I was fighting a war over in Iraq when it was all being done. It was supposed to have been rebuilt with stronger parts but who knows...Tiago took a look in there and saw alot of OEM parts but they were brand new. Also added to my tranny was a much larger transmission cooler and corvette servos. Ive not had any problems with my transmission at all even with all the power that I shoved through there so I dont know what to say. I made 450 rwhp with the auto transmission + 25% total lost through drivetrain = 560 horsepower. If I had a manual transmission instead of an automatic my horsepower loss would have been closer to 10% which would have put me at pretty close to 505 rearwheel horsepower. So thats the kind of hp differences that your looking at between an auto and a manual.

Don't worry about your automatic. It doesn't really suck. It's not some Ford POS auto. I ALWAYS LOVED beating manual imports with my auto 97 Camaro, and then saying....'not bad for an automatic, eh?' They wouldn't say anything but they knew, oh yeah, they knew they got schooled.

Just get 373 gears and you will feel better.

Yeah Cmerc Ive been in the Army in one form or another since 1998, the year I graduated highschool. Ive been in two real hazardous duty zones, Bosnia and Iraq (and technically Korea but not really).

98V6Firebird...yeah those percentages that come from comparing manual to auto really arent all that encouraging but we do have several bright sides. 1. all the fastest cars are automatics 2. Autos last alot longer than manuals 3. its really hard to mess up shifting gears with an auto.

What he means is that with an automatic, your car is gonna run more consistent each time, and a manual tranny is not gonna shift as fast as an automatic. But having a manual is more fun

Take a look at your RPO codes on your door to see what gears you have, that will have a huge impact on how fast your car accelerates. The gears RPO code will start with GU then a number. GU5 is 3.23s, and GU6 is 3.42s. 3.42s are the best from the factory, but you won't have them in an automatic car. If it feels really sluggish you might have 2.73. If thats the case, save up for some new gears instead.

An auto V6 will not have 2.73's. Either 3.08, 3:23, or if your lucky like 'stevethepirate' you will get 3:42. Whether you have posi or not is kind of a crap-shoot.

3.08 means you will take off sluggish from a stop at WOT. You will get better gas mileage than the higher ratios and a higher top SPEED.

As you go up your acceleration gets better, gas mileage goes down along with top SPEED.(do not confuse with top END)

Some of these people around here have some real interesting names for example "assbreeze", something I would have never associated with a Fbody or even thought about in a million years!

My car should be done by tommorow : ) I miss it. They said that a big deal with the firebirds, from what they have seen, is that the doors are so freaking huge so the hinges go bad and that was the case on my drivers side. They replaced the pins, so its fine now and they did some body work, and later today they are supposed to paint it. *Black* Then it will be the BEAST it was born to be.. The ObsidianSixer..

Was that too dramatic?

I got my new name : ), I am waiting for my sister to get home with the camera so I can take some pictures, and I am going to trying to take a video with it to demonstrate the strobes.

But the coolest thing happened with the paint job. The guy who owned Maaco dealt with my paint transaction, and ever since I dropped the car off to get painted I went by the shop like everyday to check on it and I had asked him if he could have it ready by last saturday because my dad had his party on Sunday. Well when I went to pick up my car he gave me a their top of the line paint job instead of the $400 paint job I paid for. He said that he could just really tell I am going to take care of my car and he really liked me and how I handled myself. (Or so he told my father). So he just wanted to take my car under his wing and do this for me. It was pretty awesome, and I couldn't believe he did that for me, but my car looks reallly good now.

picture rule of thumb, bigger is better!
if you can take them away from objects, its easier to make cool sigs cause theres no reflections.

Wow... hey crunkmaro, I did what you said.. I think. I put my car up on blocks, then put it in neutral. I then turned the wheel 1 time and from what I saw the driveshaft only spun exactly 1.5 times per the 1 wheel rotation.. So essentially my ratio is 1.50:1?? Is that possible or do i times it by 2? to make it 3.08:1? I'm confused.
