Bought my old Third-Gen 'Bird back!

Posted By: BirdtotheBone On: 03-21-2010 @ 03:15:02         Reply | Edit
I check my local Craigslist every day for the kinds of cars I like. I don't know why I do it, since I (until recently) had no intention of ever buying one. A couple days ago, the Third-Gen Firebird I traded in for my Fourth-Gen showed up! I had always regretted losing it and thought, "Hey... I have $1800 just laying around. I should buy it back!" So I did. And with it I bought back most of the problems I sold it with, plus two years' worth of new ones.

The biggest problem is that it idles at 600RPMs when in Reverse and Drive. It stalls out a lot in Reverse because of this. When I barely tap the throttle in Drive, it nearly stalls but only for a split second. When I start the car, it revs really high and drops to normal over the course of ten seconds. Whenever I cycle through the gears in place, there are various clanks from the tranny. These problems all seem related, but I just don't know enough about the car. Any ideas what it might be? Thank you in advance!

I dunno if it matters, but it's an automatic with the 3.1L engine. Just to save you guys from asking.

Does everyone else go out of town when GoldenPhoenix does?

So I just noticed it's smoking from the tranny dipstick tube. Last time I checked, that was not a good thing. The fluid also leaks when the car is moving but not when it's parked. Hypotheses?

I'm usually very wary of Craigslist, but I felt I knew what I was getting. I don't feel ripped off or anything... it's an old car, things break. Or smoke, or idle rough...

No offense, but if you traded in the car with problems and you didn't know how to fix them, why would you buy it back with the same problems, and probably more if you still don't know whats causing it? I would've used that money towards your 3.8 or something else if you just HAD to spend it.

But anyways, glad you got your old car back.

I had always regretted trading it in because I planned on owning it for a long time. I always put the best parts on it, used premium, bought lifetime warranties, et cetera. When I traded it, I lost out on all the investments I made in it. I kept all the paperwork, so I can make good use of the warranties now. The biggest thing where this is concerned is the fact that I spent a ton retrofitting the A/C to R-134a and didn't get to use it more than a month. Besides that, my little brother will be getting his license soon and will likely destroy his first car, which he already owns. The third-gen can be there to replace it, and I'll of course get to drive it every now and again. Gotta keep it in the family, you know? And finally, the completely illogical reason: I had it during the best time in my life, and I just plain missed it.

I understand the sentimental reasons, I would like to have my 3.8 back for a DD, but if the cons out weigh the pros, then I wouldn't do it, but thats just me. Anyways, like I said before, glad you got your old car back, hopefully you'll once again have a great time!

I've done a lot of work to the car since I got it, but it's still not passing emissions. The tranny is fixed and the issues are different now. The main one is bizarre to me and I don't think I've ever heard of it before. When I take my foot off the brake, the car quickly revs from normal to 2000 RPMs and dips back down to normal. While driving, I'll apply the brakes to stop at a light, and the car's RPMs will dip below idle and the car will stall if I let it. Like I said, I've never heard of this happening before and can't even begin to think of how the brakes are related to this at all.

Here's what you may need to know. It's a '90 V6 MPFI automatic. It failed emissions by three times the limit on carbon monoxide and by 30% of the limit on hydrocarbons (NOx is fine). I've replaced basically every sensor including the TPS but not the IAC. I like to think I replaced the TPS correctly but nothing I do is ever guaranteed. I had to remove the IAC to get to the TPS and only put back the IAC, without adjusting it if that's even necessary. The transmission has been repaired except the clip that holds the passing gear cable to the throttle broke and can't be easily replaced (as far as I can tell). I replaced the plug wires, air filter, fuel filter, and a test showed that the battery is in good shape. Please help before I throw even more money at this thing.

Why in the world would I ever want to downgrade to a V8?
