Hard start in v6 bird

Im new to the whole f-body scene. I just purchased a 1989 2.8 mpfi firebird. It requires sometime in order to get it started. I usually have to hold the ignition for about 6 seconds before it starts. Most of the time it doesnt start on the first try, however when it starts it usually smells rich for the first couple of seconds which leads me to believe that everything of the fuel side is good. Just wondering if someone can put me in the right direction before i start checking everthing in the ignition system.

well, personally i would start with the ignition side of things...maybe even the starter...
does it crank at a good speed? if not you may have a worn starter or just ground cable issue for the starter, AKA corrosion...
as far as the ignition goes, how many miles are on the car, were the plugs and wires ever changed, are they in decent shape...also, if its mpfi- that means its gonna have a coil pack, i believe (dont know a ton about the 2.8)...if i have time ill do some research at school on ALLDATA tomarrow...
as far as smelling rich when it starts, hell, it could be the fuel pressure regulator (being a fuel injected car and all) stuck to max, but that would also bring on a rough idle, poor gas milage...
possible that you have some dirty/clogged injectors, causing a poor spray pattern into the combustion chamber making it not want to start cuz of a bad air fuel ratio...
egr valve could be stuck open (sorta doubt it) making it harder to start, letting exhaust into the engine constantly and not just at mid throttle cruising, but that would also bring about a rough idle...
*shrug* im gonna look some stuff up, and if you can, give us some more info/background on the car... --

Most of the usual ignition stuff was replaced recently,Plugs, wires, rotor, cap(i have receipts to verify). It's not DIS so it just has one coil and a Distributor with electronic advance. I ohm the coil out last night and everything checked out fine, i even took the ignition module to get check last night at autozone and it also checked out fine.

well, you could check the fuel pressure first to make sure that isnt it, that one is pretty easy to do, just connect a fuel pressure gauge to the schrader valve and start the car, it should read about 40 psi, give or take about 7psi due to normal wear of fuel components, like the fuel pump...if you have less than 30 psi, you should further test the fuel pump, if you have like 50 or more psi then your regulator has failed open, and you need a new one.
also, you might benefit from an injector clean then, do it the right way, i dont know what kind of tools you have, but get some Winz(sp) fuel injector cleaner...relieve pressure on your fuel rail (schrader valve), tap into it with the plastic adapters to block off your return line (for hard lines), if you have soft lines you can usually just crimp them, but be careful, disconnect power to fuel pump, hook up the fuel injector cleaner bottle (container thingy that you put the Winz in) using your schrader valve, and an air hose to the canister, at 20-35psi i believe, and start the car and let it run on the Winz until it dies, (about 20 min), pretty susre with Winz you have to mix half with gasoline...
or you could take it to a shop and pay for about an hour worth of labor... --
