Category:  Appearance

Tools Needed:
10mm socket/wrench/ratchet
Flathead & medium sized Phillips screwdrivers
Jack stands or ramps

Parts Needed:
New Rear Bumper

Purpose:
Change out a damaged bumper cover or change from a Formula/Firebird bumper to a Trans Am bumper or vice versa.

How - To:
Step 1

Get the back of the car off the ground(Not necessary, but helpful). I would recommend ramps even if you have to lift it using a jack to put it on the ramps.

Step 2

Now time for the fun.
Remove the phillips screw in the front of the bumper behind the rear wheels(red arrow).
While you are there, take your 10mm socket or whatever and remove that nut right next to the screw. Do the same on the other side of the car.

Step 3

Get under the car and remove the 6 plastic retainers at the bottom of the bumper using the flathead or a fork might work too.
2 of the retainers, 1 each side, are at the bottom front of the bumper near the tire(see pic below).

Step 4

You do NOT need to remove these 4(8 total) bolts like the Haynes manual says to under the car. I found out the hard way.
You also don't need to remove the sidemarker lights unless you are going to use them on the new bumper.

Step 5

Remove the rear carpet near the latch and the plastic cover over the spare tire on the passenger side.
Undo the plastic screws to remove the tail light assemblies(5 total on each side). One is hidden behind the spare tire(#5)(remove it anyway) and one is in the opposite corner on the drivers side in the same spot. Unplug wiring harness(connector white/blue locate on drivers side of center).

Step 6

Near that 5th plastic taillight screw on each side is one of the three bolts on each side that you have to remove(10mm socket).
Here's the driver's side.

Step 7

On the driver's side the nut is pictured above. On the passenger side the middle nut is hidden under the antenna apparatus. You might need a 10mm open ended wrench to get to it if you have a power antenna(see below).

Step 8
Remove the 4 plastic retainer screws on top of the bumper below where the taillights were. Before you pull off the bumper check that you have removed the following:
10 plastic retainer screws(4 top, 6 bottom)
3-10mm nuts on each side
2 Phillips screws
This should be all.
Pull each side out away from the car slightly and pull the whole bumper cover backward away from the car.

Step 9

Installation is the reverse of the removal.
I went from this:

Step 10
