Autometer Shift Light Installation (98 ONLY)
Category:  Miscellaneous
Difficulty:  7
Approximate Time:  2-3 hours
Application(s):  LS1 - 98 ONLY

Tools Needed:
Wire cutter/stripper
Dremel/Rotary tool
Screw Driver

Parts Needed:
Autometer Shift light (Jegs 105-5340)
Shift Pills - (Jegs 105-5356)
Wire

Purpose:
Install a shift indicator lamp to help with consistant shifting points.

How - To:
Step 1

Even though the LS1 is an 8 cylinder engine, you need to set the shift light up for 4 cylinder mode. This is due to an ignition change in the GM design. The mode is most often determined by a switch on the back of the shift light as is the case with this Autometer Proshift light and quick lite.

Step 2
Determine a mounting location for the light. Keep in mind the light is VERY bright but it needs to be mounted in a location that is in front of you so that you can watch for the light while watching the rpms/gauge cluster/track/etc. I mounted mine in the driver's side AC Vent in the A-pillar. Others have mounted them in the center AC vents, on top of the steeting wheel, on the dash in front of the windshield. The location is up to you. Just remember that you need to run a wire to the PCM on the front passenger side of the engine bay as well as a ground wire and a switch ignition power source. I used a line to the chassis as a ground and created my own switched ignition source. Using a relay wired directly to the battery and powered the realy with the IGN fuse in the interior fuse panel.

Step 3
Mount the light in your favorite location and run your power and ground wires. The last wire on the light needs to be spliced into the tach output wire at the PCM.

ON 98 LS1 CARS ONLY - the output pin is pin 35 on the BLUE connector. When you remove the two 80 pin connectors on the pcm, you will notice one is red and the other is blue. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT CONNECTOR AND WIRE BEFORE CUTTING INTO ANYTHING. Also, notice which connector went where as you don't want to accidently bolt the blue connector down where the red was, not good. You should that if you unclip the cover from the connector, that a white wire run into pin 35, you will want to splice into this wire.

Step 4

When splicing into the wire, I recommend just shaving the coating off of the wire as far back on the wire as you can. This allows you to fix your mistake easily if you accidently splice into the wrong wire or accidently cut through the wire. Again, I simply removed the coating from the wire and crimped on a two to one wire splicer. This has so far been a very good connection with no problems.

You can see it angles a little bit out of the window which isn't great but I assure you that the light is BRIGHT enough to see at all times. Perhaps the smaller Quick Shift light would have fit there better.

on the 99's, the tach output wire is pin 10 on the red connector. The one that is closest to the firewall.
