Tools Needed:
Ramps
Racket
10MM Socket
Flat Head Screw Driver
Pliers
2- 3/4" Wrenches
Drill & Bit
Oil Pan
Dykes
Sheetrock Knife
Parts Needed:
B&M Trans Cooler #80264
1 extra hose clamp (kit includes 4, you need 5)
1 quart transmission fluid
Zip Ties
Purpose:
Install B&M Transmission Cooler on 4th gen with 4L60E.
**Save the little blue caps that are on the cooler for your TB Bypass. They are a perfect fit.**
How - To:
Step 1
Put the car on ramps. Locate your existing transmission cooling lines. There are 2 shown in pictures 1 & 2. One is crimped.
Step 2
The other has a spring clip holding the hose to the metal line. The spring clip is not strong enough for the new, thicker line so it will have to be replaced with the 5th clamp you bought.
Step 3
Open your new Trans Cooler. You won't need most of the stuff in it because it is a universal kit. First attach the 4 glue squares to the back of the trans cooler on all 4 corners. They have holes in them for the zip ties to go through. Once installed, these will allow enough room for air to go between the cooler & the radiator.
Step 4
Remove one cap from the cooler & attach the supplied hose to it with a hose clamp. Bring the cooler with hose under the car. Slip it in front of the radiator. Take 2 of the plastic zip ties provided in the kit & slip them through the cooler & through the radiator. You only need 2 on the bottom of the cooler because the top is already such a tight fit, it's not going to move.
Step 5
Use the 10MM socket to remove the 2 bolts from the bottom of the fan (if necessary) to get the plastic ends onto the zip ties. After they are secured, cut the excess length off the zip ties to avoid them hitting the fans.
Step 6
Drill 2 holes in the air dam for the hoses to go through. I found this to be easier than trying to route the lines anywhere else. Route the first line through the hole. This line will be connected with a brass fitting to the hose that has the spring clip on it.
Step 7
Stretch the hose to the top cooler line & cut it to the correct length. Take one of the brass fitting & put it together. I used the larger fitting which has 3/4" threads. Do not overtighten as these are soft brass.
Step 8
Go under the car with the oil pan & pliers. Remove the spring clip from the top line. You will lose an ounce or 2 of fluid. Put a new hose clamp on the hose which is still attached to the car. Put the brass fitting in this line & tighten the clamp. This is a tight fit as the GM lines are a little smaller than the new cooler lines. Put a clamp on the nw hose from the cooler. Slip the fitting into this hose & clamp it.
Step 9
Attach the rest of the new hose to the cooler with a clamp. Route the hose through the 2nd hole & up to the metal line leading to the transmission. Cut any excess hose & clamp the hose to the line. Make sure all these clamps are TIGHT. Run the car & check for leaks.
Step 10
I used a zip tie to hold the line up out of the way. The plastic ring for the intake bellows works well for this (I have 1LE elbow so my bellows tube is gone). Take the car for a drive & check fluid once it's hot. Add as necessary.
Make sure you double check all hose clamps to make sure they are tight. The lines are under pressure & if one of the clamps pops off it will completely drain your tranny in a matter of seconds.
