4L60E PCM Disabler (Tranny tricker information)
Category:  Transmission
Difficulty:  10
Approximate Time:  1 hour
Application(s):  4L60E cars
Added By:  Jim_Hogan

Tools Needed:
Remove Pan from stock 4L60E
Remove Filter
Remove entire wiring harness from pan - this requires unbolting 2 solenoid/springs (I'll just call them things) it will be obvious what has to be unbolted to get the harness out.

Parts Needed:
Newark Electronics http://search.newark.com/product_search.phtml

Item plug wire color& Letter Newark part# price

1-2 shift Sol. -- Lt Green & Red(A & E) -- 01F9771 -- $2.75 -> [Jim Note]This is 25(W) 30 (Ohm) Resistor[/Jim Note]

TCC Control Sol. -- Black & Red (U & E) -- 01F9917 -- $3.37 -> [Jim Note]This is 50(W) 15 (Ohm) Resistor[/Jim Note]
3-2 Control sol. -- Whit & Red (S & E) -- 01F9911 -- $3.37 -> [Jim Note]This is 50(W) 10 (Ohm) Resistor[/Jim Note]

Pressure Sol. -- Purple & Lt Blue (C & D) -- 01F9904 -- $3.37 -> [Jim Note]This is 50(W) 5 (Ohm) Resistor[/Jim Note]

Temp sensor -- Grey & Brown(M & L) -- Radio shack 200 Ohm, 1 watt (cheap!!) -> [Jim Note]I COULD NOT FIND THIS RESISTOR _ANYWHERE SO I went with a 220 Ohm, 1 Watt and it works fine[/Jim Note]

Dark Blue wire to ground (R) to indicate 3rd gear selected.

Purpose:
This is for guys who are doing tranny swaps that involve removing your 4l60e and putting in a different tranny such as a TH350 or a TH400. I HAVE NOT DONE THIS MOD NOR DO I KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THIS WAS INFO THAT CAME OFF OF THE LT1_EDIT MAILING LIST. I DON'T KNOW IF IT EVEN WORKS. THIS WAS DONE ON AN LT1 car with a 4l60e not an LS1 AND as far as I know, an Impalla SS was used to test this....

How - To:

Here is a description of the tranny tricker I built for the PCM when you remove the 4L60E but don't want to reprogram.

I mounted it all on a 1/8 x 2 x 6 piece of aluminum. You need to remove the wiring harness from the old tranny and cut everything off, just leave the wires attached to the plug. Then mount the plug on the same board as the resistors, this way it will plug into the PCM tranny plug. I mounted it on a bracket attached with the tranny pan bolts.

Total of everything way under 30 bucks. Drove a few hundred miles already and NO trouble
codes :-)

Step 2

This is the stock connector. You have to remove the pan from your 4l60E and pull out the whole wiring harness. I had to unbolt three of the solenoids/valves to get the harness out. I removed ALL of the wires without cutting anything. Note that if you can do this, where to connect the resistors becomes kind of obvious as the red wire (E)that connects to the other end of the resistors is already in a nice connector with the wire it connects to. SO you can clip the connector off and replace the connector with the right resistors.

Step 3

The plastic box is a waterproof "project box" that my local electronics store sold for 10$s (IEI if you have one - I assume Radio Hack has something similar). The box is 195 x 80 x 55mm and fits nicely in the car.

Step 4

I screwed the plug to the box after drilling a small hole in the box. Should still be pretty close to waterproof.

Step 5

And here is the box all sealed up. I used some bolt cutters to cut the excess from the little bolts I used to hold the resistors down. I tried leaving them on BUT that little bit of extra clearance made a big difference in how the box fit in the car.

Step 6

And there it is in the car. Where? Look right behind the computer. Because I don't need the rear o2s (I have o2 sims) and I don't need the stock VSS wires (the Gear Vendor has it's own wiring for the speedo) I was able to relocate that whole harness up into the engine bay. Note the o2s sitting right in front of the computer.

As an update, I had sent George an email to share how I built mine - he suggested the plastic box may not be a good idea as the resistors throw off heat and may need some air to keep them cool. I'll have to change my design if I run into problems.
