Computer Swap
Category:  Miscellaneous
Difficulty:  1
Approximate Time:  35 minutes
Application(s):  LS1 Cars

Tools Needed:
Flat Head Screw Driver
1/4" drive ratchet
7mm socket for 1/4" drive ratchet
8mm socket for 1/4" drive ratchet
13/32 socket for 1/4" drive ratchet

Parts Needed:
New computer - prefereably a reprogrammed jobber

Purpose:
Remove your stock LS1 computer and replace it with a custom tuned computer.

How - To:
Step 1

Everything you need to work on is on the passenger side of the car.

The basic plan is to disconnect the battery remove the plastic from the cowl, swap the computers and reassemle everything.

Step 2

Disconnect the battery using an 8mm wrench, socket or battery disconnect tool, which ever you prefer. I usually just disconnect the negative side (black) but it shouldn't make a difference which side you disconnect.

Step 3

Using the flat head screw driver, remove the push pins from the cowl area that hold the plastic down. Pry up on the inner plug and pull it out with your hand, then you can easily pull the plug part of the combo out. I usually remove just the pushpin on the far left and the one in the middle as pointed to in the pictures. It gives me enough room to move the plastic out of the way and pull the computer out.

Step 4

Disconnect the plugs from the computer. A 7mm socket will do. It may seem like you have the bolts loose enough but the plugs will not come out. Keeping turn them until you can pull the connectors off. Pull both off and move them out of the way.

Next remove the two bolts that hold the computer case down, they are located right in front of the computer. I think they are 13/32s but someone correct me if I am wrong, I don't remember right now. With the two bolts removed push the plastic from the cowl up and out of the way and pull the computer out. You may have to be crafty to get it out but it does come out with the hood on the car and the cowl pushed back.

Step 5

With the case and computer removed, pull the old computer out and slide the new comptuer into the case. Again, move the plastic out of the way and slide the case with the new computer back into the car. Bolt the case back in.

Reconnect the terminals. The blue terminal connects to the back (closer to the back of the car) and the red connector in front. Don't mix them up (I'm not sure you even could). Bolt them back in.

Get the pushpins and put them back. One may be longer than the other and it does matter so I hope you read the instructions first and didn't mix them up or forget which went where. I have the longer plug on the far left and the shorter plug towards the middle, HOWEVER, the first time I did this, I didn't realize they were going to be different sizes and I may have mixed them up.

Reconnect the battery and go make sure your car starts.
