Purpose:
Replace the weak factory rear pinion yoke with a stronger 1350 pinion yoke as found on Moser 12 bolts and/or Strange 12 bolts and/or Ford 9" rears.
UPDATE: I should mention that the person who sent me this information has a sweet 3rd gen f-body and so does Rick Lindsedt - I'm ASSUMING that this works in 4th gen rear ends also but I am not 100% sure and will try to find out to be certain.
How - To:
Step 1 This information is not my own and came across my local mailing list. I know nothing more about the modification but thought it was great information to pass along. That said:
My thanks to Tim Sifford (hope I spell that right) and his thanks follows:
Big Thanks to Rick Lindstedt / Denny / and Dal for being instrumental
in putting this all together. Not sure whether this would work with a
driveshaft that is not built to spec (i.e. a prefabbed unit like an
LPE, TPIS, etc). With a Denny's shaft it is not a problem since you
have to measure.
Tim
Step 2 You can bolt a new aftermarket driveshaft with 1350 U-Joints to a
stock 10-bolt 7-5/8" rearend. You do not need to use a conversion
U-Joint for connecting the driveshaft to the rearend. All you have to
do is order a Pinion Yoke for a 1990 Chevy Astro. It is made for use
with 1350 U-Joints and the Astro has a 10-bolt 7-5/8" rearend. The GM
Part numbers and prices are as follows:
Yoke:
PN = 26006975
Price = $48.22
Straps:
PN = 14046907
Price = $2.27
Quantity = 2
Total = $4.54
Bolts:
PN = 15590788
Price = $1.18
Quantity = 4
Total = $4.72
Step 3 While I personally would not dump the money into beefing up a 10 bolt, since it is cheaper than a 12 bolt this is something else to consider.
