LT1 or LT4 heads

Posted By: ChazGotAZ28 On: 10-28-2009 @ 22:42:34         Reply | Edit
Ok I bought some LT4 heads/intake manifold awhile back and am debating whether to port them and put them on or if I should just port my LT1 heads and intake. Anybody have any flow charts or personal experience on for this. I'm running a 383 stroker motor fully built and forged.

If you have the LT4 heads/intake, I'd have AI port them, no doubt. If the work they do on their LT4 heads is as good as their LT1 stuff, definitely go for it.

Here's a picture of the runners on my LT1 heads that they ported for me:

Gorgeous, I actually have a local shop here in Tucson that I'm gonna go to. They do work that looks just like that. Any recomendations on cams, I'm running the same LT4 hotcam that I've had since I stroked out the motor and am ready to move up.

While I'm sure the shop does good work, I am POSITIVE that they have not done near the research and have had the success at porting LT1/4 heads than AI (or LE) for that matter. Most shops use a standard profile that will "work," but will not maximize your gains with whatever valvetrain you choose.

The hotcam will work with stock heads - no porting necessary. Since you're going to have them ported anyway, I would ditch the hotcam and go with a custom grind. You'll be MUCH happier in the long run. AI will put a package together for you (head porting and cam selection) that will net what you're looking for with no guesswork.

In short, if you want okay performance for your money, have your local shop do it. If you want the motor to kick some serious ass, go with AI.

FWIW, I went the AI route on my motor (heads, cam, ported intake) and the numbers you see in my sig are on a mail-order tune. Second to none.

Cool, I'll check them out. Can you hook me up with a website for AI. I have the website for LE but can't find AI.

Joe already explained so I won't waste the effort, but I very highly recommend Advanced Induction as well. They have most of the LT1 records and you will get the very same heads those record setting cars are running.

Heck yeah. If you already have the LT4 head and intake castings I would definatley get AI to set you up with a 200 or more CC intake runner job with thier street/strip intake and custom cam. No doubt you would have an unbelievable set up right out of the box. With more extensive tuning and getting the "little things" squared away I'd be REALY interested to see if you could hit 10's on motor with skinnies up front and DR or slicks out back dead hooking.

If I knew what I do now back when I did my set up there is no question I would have sent my LT1 heads and intake off to AI for a 200cc competition head and cam package shooting for a very tame 11.5:1 compression ratio on pump gas.
