Pinion Seal

Posted By: ryguy_45832 On: 10-28-2009 @ 18:48:58         Reply | Edit
How hard is it to change the pinion seal for the 10 bolt? Any special tools required? Do I need to drain the rear end fluid? After being raped on a, coolant flush/wp replacement, I think I'll try and tackle the pinion seal replacement myself. Plus I just picked up a spohn adjustable tq arm that I'm going to install.

This is debatable. Some people say that you can't remove the pinion seal without affecting preload on the pinion bearings, unless you re-tighten the nut to EXACTLY where you removed it by marking the depth on the pinion threads. You also run the risk of crushing the crush sleeve even further.

If you choose to do it this way, I'm not responsible for any rear noise and/or destruction.

Remove the driveshaft and pinion nut (marking the EXACT location of the nut). Remove the yoke (remembering that position also). Pry out the seal with a screwdriver and reinstall the new one. You will lose some fluid when switching them out so you may want to lower the level in the differential (might be a good time to change it anyway if your seal is already leaking).

IMO, the correct way is to completely disassemble the rear, inspect, and reassemble. Just too many risks involved going the other way.

Hmmm...maybe I should bite the bullet and have this done as well then. I was hoping it wouldn't have to be so precise but anything involving the rear end usually is. The Haynes manual suggest marking the pinion seal in counting the amount of threads. It honestly doesn't sound that difficult based on the description given but as you said, the process needs to be PRECISE.

Is yours leaking? Or are you just looking to do it as preventative maintenance? If it isn't leaking, I'd say hell with it.

NO, it is leaking. It's pretty much covered the center of the rear end and torque arm. Leaking onto the ground, no, but covered everything in it's general vicinity, yes.

I would try it the easy (cheap) way first, however, RamAir is right on. It takes a LOT of force to crush that sleeve, more than you can produce with a socket wrench. When I built my rear end, I used a 2 ft breaker bar with a 4 ft pipe slid over it and I still had to stand on it to crush that sleeve.

I would mark the position of the pinion nut and use some lock-tight when you screw it back on and torque it down goot-an-tight. IN all, if you did end up crushing the sleeve a tiny bit more, I dont see it hurting anything. And if that doesnt work, you can always have someone else do it.

Are there any tools that are "absolutly necessary" to complete the process. Other than the inch-pound tq wrench. In the manual it suggest special tools to do the job such as a companion flange tool that holds it in place but also states that a large pair of pliers work just as well. "To get the flange off it may also require a two or three-jaw puller"? Did you have to use any of these tools besides the inch-pound tq wrench? thx for the help guys.

you need a C-clip tool for taking off the driveshaft

Posted By: RamAir95TA On: 11-02-2009 @ 10:07:38     Reply | Top | Edit
Ummm...no.

There are four bolts holding in the driveshaft and nothing else.

lol...I know I don't need a special tool to take off the driveshaft. I'm referring to more of the extensive rear end procedure.

If it just dripping slightly, why bother? When their is leak under a car it looks ten times worse then it is,wind pushes and spreads it out and makes look bad when it really isn't.Just keep an eye on it-you'll get rid of the car before it ever dries up!

"Why bother?" Because I like a leak free car and the reassurance that the leak wont suddenly get worse and cause catastrophic failure to the rear end. Thanks Harlan.
