10 bolt center sections..

Posted By: ROSST On: 09-14-2009 @ 05:06:09         Reply | Edit
Well, customer wont kick for the 12 bolt swap. Honestly I'm not sure he needs to. He wont be making a lot of passes at the dragstrip, and wont be running a good sticky drag radial, let alone slicks. So you guys that have been around,..
Who has a strong 10 bolt center section unit? and I have heard some things lately about some brands of ring and pinions, not being of good material.?? Who's gear sets are the ones to get for the 10 bolt appl.? And... as long as I'm sucking info.., what spline axels are in the stock 97 10 bolt? are they a 28..? will they be ok or can we go to an 31 spline appl. in a 10 bolt carrier, and upgrade the shafts..? Thanx Guys!!

I'm in the process right now of doing a 3.73 swap in my 94 Z. I did a lot of research before i bought the ring/pinion. Richmond was one of the top brands from reviews and forums. They have a high nickel content so they are noisy but strong. Pretty much the higher the nickel content the stronger they are. As for the stock 10 bolt, I do make about 15-20 passes a year on my car so I just welded the tubes on the stock housing. And i bought a brace/cover setup to preload the axles. As far as i know if your going to upgrade the axle shaft im almost postive you have to get a larger carrier. One thing you might want to mention to the customer is a LSD clutch pack rebuild kit. All the more assurance to not one wheel it everywhere

I was going to do a complete new install of the carier. The one that is in there is the factory unit with 160,000 miles on it. Anybody know how good the Auburn is for the 10 bolt? Hadnt given any thought about welding the tube to the center section..I saw a good 12 bolt spin in the housing once.. tore the bottom of the car all to hell. Wouldnt hurt Also looking at the Ratech rebuild kit, found that on the search here. looks like good stuff.

my factory unit that i have now has 195,000 on it. The ring and pinion are in perfect condition, the only reason im redoing it is because im going to 3.73 and it needs a wheel bearing. No sense in spending extra money upgrading the axles/carrier unless hes making big power.

I had an eaton posi w/richmond 3.73 gears and a rear girdle with a ton of track time on it with numerous 1.7 to 1.8 60' times and about 6 or so low 1.60x 60' times and one 1.588 60' time with absolutely no problems or signs of problems. The eaton is costly but my second recommendation is a tru-track posi from detroit or a detroit locker if the car is a mostly track and weekend use type car.

Most important detail is to have someone who has done rear ends before set it up and do it professionally. No matter how good of parts you buy an improperly set up rear end will eat itself to death. G/L.

I agree Airborne, setting them up correct is very important. I just dont want to put junk stuff in, and have it go out pre-maturely. Even set up right, junk parts will get very lose and go bad real quick. That is my point here, to gather info on what has been used and how it holds up. It's a 6 spd car with a conservitive number at the crank at 490HP..well ok 510 But it wont see 20 passes in the next 3 years. I'll look into the Eaton unit. I was pretty much going to go with the Richmond gear set. I have allways used them in all my other apl. which have allways been 9in. Fords, not a 10 bolt Chevys. This guy would not be happy with me if I put a locker in it. A limited slip is all that is needed .
