engine compartment whine

While driving,there is a whine from the engine
compartment.It only does it in drive ,put it neutral(moving or stopped)the whine stops.The car drives fine and nothing is wrong,trans shifts good and engine has plenty of power.Any ideas?

Disconnect the serpentine belt and see if the noise disappears. If it does it's either the A/C compressor, alternator, tensioner, or power steering pump.
