Fuel Line Sizing

Posted By: 95BandiTA On: 08-30-2009 @ 22:20:21         Reply | Edit
Ok so I'm FINALLY to the point to where in the next few weeks I'll be ordering my fuel lines and fittings. I'm sumping the tank and running an A1000 pump. I've got a 383 with LE3 heads/cam and a powerdyne running 11 lbs of boost. I will be upgrading to a t78 or similar turbo within the next year as money allows and was wondering what size feed and return lines I needed to run for my motor. I don't know if it matters, but I am running 68lb/hr injectors. I am running an Aeromotive adjustable fuel pressure regulator and also I had my fuel rails welded with -AN fittings on both ends. Thanks in advance for the help

Use whatever your rails are plumbed with

If you plan on upgrading in the near future to quite a big step up above what you've got now, Id run -8 feed and -6 returns even if you dont use them

You running single or dual pumps? Intake or inline? Single feed or parallel rails? Returnless LS1 style or standard return style?

I ran -8 feed and -6 returns on mine, basicly the same set up your looking at sumping the tank A1000 pump and i have a A1000 regulator.

Ron, my setup is pretty much identical to yours: pump, regulator and sump. How many horsepower will a -8 feed safely with this setup? Also would it hurt to tie the -6 return line back to the factory pickup to feed the fuel back into the tank? I am removing the factory fuel pump as well.

You can reuse whatever factory lines you want to. Not really ideal since you have to buy fittings for them which is the expensive part. 15' of AN-6 is what? $25?

When the return is too small youll see the pressure build up over time

Sorry, I meant on the return I was wanting to run the -6 all the way back to the top of the gas tank and tie it back in to where the 3/8 originally came out to feed the motor which won't be used since I am taking the factory pump out and using only the pickup/sending unit so that the gas gauge still works.

thats what I did with mine I used the factory feed from the pump for a return. -8 HP wise is dependent on the fuel pressure your using but I dont see a problem with most people useing -8 for anything, hell theres people out there using stock lines making 6-700 HP. Im hoping to be around the 800 HP mark, BTW I have -12 feeding from the tank to the pump then -8 from the pump to the engine.

BTW for the poster above -6 you can only get in 3 6 10 and 20 foot rolls so you need a 20 foot box and thats over 90 bucks for -6, -8 20 foot rolls are around 125. Im not even going to tell you how much I paid for the -20 braided lines I used to make up rad hoses.

I certainly appreciate all the help, now I need to start making a list of all the fittings I need to order.
