97 TA electrical problems/alarm/lights

Posted By: CWS6FLY On: 07-11-2009 @ 03:01:20         Reply | Edit
I have a 97 Trans Am with a few electrical problems and i think they might be related. Ive had someone sugest a body control module could be my problem.     First thing that happened was my lights stopped coming up when it got dark out. I would have to turn off the car and try the knob until they raised. New problem now is when i unlock or lock the car using the keyless entry. The lights open and close. And when they do close one of my head lamp motors keeps for a few seconds until it stops.    Any sugestions on where to start looking would be great.

Replace headlight motor(s). Thats whats causing the headlights to cycle when you hit the remotelock/ unlock. Stripped out gear in the motor.

Or if your savvy enough you can do a search and look up how to do a fix for free.

Basically, you remove the armature from the head light motor (one 10mm nut, probably rusted), then rotate the motor 180* and reinstall armature. Then you will be using the side of the gear that is not stripped.

But the fact that they are opening and closing while i turn off or activate the alarm doesnt make add up then. I guess they arent related.

They are related. You are # 183,483 to have this problem with a 4th gen firebird. My 94 formula did it, my '00 WS6 did it, my friends 96 t/a still does it. Its the headlight motor.

DO A SEARCH, or dont post up asking for help then say we're wrong when help/ advice is offered.

Damn Canadians

Must have been a language barrier issue. jk, I didnt read that you had two issues and didnt understand what you where telling me.

Anyway, shouldnt have jumped on ya.

Check out the above site. They sell a brass gear to replace the worn plastic gear.

Im not saying buy it, but about half way down the page there is a how to with plenty of pictures to give you an idea on how to fix it.

Instead of taking the whole motor out, just remove the "shaft nut" (you will see it in the pictures), and pry the arm off of it.

May be a good idea to soak it overnight with some penitrating oil like p-b-blaster. Once the arm is removed, use the manual crank and rotate the shaft 180* and put it back together.

Use the penitrating oil. Its going to be rusty. And you will need something to pry the arm off too, like a long screw driver, it will be rusted to the shaft more than likely be a PITA to get off as well.

They might be? Fix the headlight gear and see what happens. Who cares about auto headlights anyway.

the auto isnt the problem its the fact that they open and close every time i lock and unlock the car,

Yeah, that right there is caused by the stripped gears in the motor. I once read a write-up on this and if I remember right the motors get a short voltage spike from hitting the remote lock/unlock. When the gear is stripped the motor turns and the wrong resistance is sent back and makes the system flip out. Crazy stuff.
