Optispark?

What does the optispark control? I understand the conventional distributor part of it but what does the optical sensors do? Do they tell the computer where the cam position is. for timing AND fuel injector pulses?

Here's a place to start. Let us know if you have questions after reading or don't understand and someone will probably clarify.

I read that already and it really does not answer if the optispark controls the fuel injection pulses also. If I am having a fuel issue could it possibly be the optispark not communicating with the computer properly?

Dang, I thought that would at least buy me some time. I'm working 12 hour days right now and only have one day off before I go to nights, so the probability of me digging up a comprehensive article for you is very, very slim.
I'll tell you my initial thoughts, in a hurry.
What year is your setup? (this should have been initial info for troubleshooting obviously)
OBD-1 doesn't have a crankshaft position sensor, so the only way for it to know precise crankshaft/camshaft position is through the optispark. My experience is with OBD-1, although I believe the OBD-2 CPS is simply for misfire detection. If you have OBD-2, I'd have to check on that to be sure.
If you read the link, then you know about the low and high resolution signals sent to the PCM (it says ECM, but technically that's incorrect, although inconsequential). If you know that the PCM is controlling spark advance and fuel pulse width, then you should be able to figure out why a poor signal from the opti wouldn't be able to ONLY affect the fuel system. Your fuel injection and spark timing would both be equally affected.
If you don't post up info, there is no chance of helping you, so fork it over. --

Well, thank you for your input this is my friends 94 z28 there is a fuel issue somewhere, it will run fine when cold but after it's hot, it will run but if you shut it off it will start right up but if it sits for an hour it won't start. It is a fuel issue because if I spray starting fluid in the intake it will fire then die. I have changed the fuel pump, pressure regulator and the filter. I have done alot of research and I'm thinking maybe the optispark is to blame. Also when it wouldn't start one time there was no spark with no fuel so that's what got me thinking the optispark. And I really appreciate the feedback, there are so many things on these cars that can go wrong.

You could be getting air from the new fuel pump install . that happened to me on a friends car . got it back together ran fine for a few days then bam . started acting like you described . come to find out the rubber piece on the pump was torn, cracked . i made a new piece out of a rubber stopper and has been running fine since then .

or it could be the coolant temp sensor in the water pump
when my buddys 93 camaros temp sensor went bad it would run fine cold then would die when it warmed up and wouldnt start.
are there any codes stored in the computer? what is the fuel pressure with the car running?
coolant temp sensor is a 15 dollar part and a 5 minute install. -- 94 formula, turning into a trans am

I had a similar issue with a stock water pump and Opti before I changed that stuff out.
When the car would warm up the water pump would leak a little onto the Opti and it would run bad. Might just check to see if there's any water leaking but it's hard to see since it's pretty far down there. Shoot, anything could be leaking in that area after it warms up. -- 97 Formula, 383, Ceramic coated PS LT headers, 2800-3200 stall, DelTeq and a whole bunch of other stuff.
