What do you want it to do? Do you want to tune/reprogram or just datalog? Nevermind I misread your post. I bought my cable from Aldlcables. This is the one I bought. http://aldlcable.com/sc/details.asp?item=aldlobd2u Except I got the serial connection.
Using Datamaster for logging and tunercats for programming.

I'm not sure with it being a 96. That cable was for a 94 or 95 model with the OBDI computer and the OBDII connector. Anyways, you could flash the computers on the 94's and 95's. The 96 is OBDII so I can't tell you. If Troy (95ttoplt1) gets on, he'll be able to tell you. --

Tunercat is a free download for the trial version. And you get it for 30days, also you can use PCM Comm if all you need to do is flash and read bins. This only applies to 94 and 95's though. 93's you can bench flash your own chips, and 96 and up is obd 2 so your HP tuners should be compatable.
Get a cable from AKM.
Find some one who has time to tune for ya, sorry guys I just don't have time anymore. --

Sorry man, my life sucks right now, I come home eat dinner, sign papers for the house and go to bed, get up at 5am and go back to work. Maybe after a couple months, there has to be an end to this shit sometime. If nothing else I deploy next summer and I'll have some free time then --

It's all good. I can't race my Z anyways since I'm still in need of clutch. It's drivable but I won't be getting on it any at all. --

Hi all!
Been gone for a bit
Tuning
You will need a program for data logging and one to tune with.
I also have TunerCat and Datamaster
Both work well for our applications
