Stock 95z needs head gasket

Posted By: Axelay On: 04-22-2009 @ 11:54:04         Reply | Edit
They are quoting me $1800 for a new head gasket.

I'm trying to decide if I should have it swapped for a used engine, or put a "new" crate engine or something like that, or just suck it up and pay the $1800.

It seems like most of the cost is labor, and if I'm paying that much for labor, I think I should be getting more out of it than a gasket.

I'm not sure what the smart move is here.

So it yourself.
Save alot of money
$300 for Machine work at a shop. CLEANED AND DECKED.

$200 for gaskets and $50 for TORQUE WRENCH.

SUCK IT UP.

Maybe build up the bottom end too.

SUPER EASY.

Spit it out.

I only own basic tools.

I don't have the space or equipment to pull the engine out, and I have no experience working on them.

I can do gimme stuff, like changing brakes and such, but the thought of dismantling the front end of my car, and effectively dismantling my engine, sounds scary and crazy to me.

It would probably take me a month of Sundays, and I'd probably break something.

You're never going to learn by paying someone every time something goes wrong. Pick up a Haynes or Chilton's manual, read, read, read, suck it up, and do it yourself.

The engine has over 200,000 miles on it.

I'm getting a lot of feedback that it's time to rebuild, or put in a crate engine.

There's a racing shop in my town that will rebuild it as a "383 stroker" for about $4k, and my mechanic will install it for me for about 1-1.5k.

Other than arguments associated with labor costs (I.E. "do it yourself man" does this sound like a sound and reasonable decision? (He said it would be roughly 400hp when done, and it wouldn't be anything major in terms of causing extra wear and tear on the engine or making it fragile or anything).
