auto shifter upgrade

Posted By: bad95ws On: 04-19-2009 @ 23:49:26         Reply | Edit
I'm trying to find out what an upgraded shifter on an auto will accomplish. Does it do anything other than make the shift points easier to navigate? I was looking at some on Jegs like the Hurst or B&M T-Handle ones... like this:

http://www.jegs.com/p/B%26M/745773/10002/-1

Does that help your transmission in any way? I'm just doing some research and haven't been able to find the answers... THANKS!!!

I don't think they even make them for 4th gens. I do know they make one specific to the 3rd gens. I'm going to get one for my IROC.

I have a B&M Hammer shifter on my 94' Formula.
4L60e transmissions should not be manualy shifted so it's more for looks than anything else.

I'm not actually looking into it for an fbody, but I couldn't find ANY info on it for the other car so I figured this would be a good place to start w/ research. I guess I was a bit surprised to see that there aren't some universal fit ones just depending on the type of cable or linkage that your shifter uses in conjunction w/ the tranny... I guess there's a bit more to it than I realized.

The B&M Hammer shifter will work on 3 or 4 speed automatics. It has a little piece you add for a 3 speed. The biggest concern to me, is fitting it to the actual hump in your car! I had to do a little cutting of the shifter assembly & use a few spacers to fit my car, but it wasn't hard, it looks great, it works great & I'm using my slightly modified stock consol.

I would consider the Hammer, to be a universal fit.

Have you checked out summitracing.com ? They are usually a few $'s cheaper than Jeb's.

Good luck! Making the modification is half the fun!!!

Sorry, it's Jeg's not Jeb's.

Well, I checked summit to see if they had anything different. It's good to hear someone say that about it basically being a universal fit as that REALLY is what I expected. I would have to do some console modifying, but I think it's do-able.
