new motor going into car

So it's late one night, and its raining quite badly...and my car goes into what appeared at the time to be about an inch of water....but in reality, it was more like....10. Naturally the car inhaled all the water it could. One might hope that the opti would go out before allowing it to suck in such a large amount of water, but no, that only happened AFTER it filled itself up with water. Great.

K. So, even though I'm a full time toyota mechanic...well, I work full time and have little time to fix it, so, I have it towed to a shop I've worked with in the past, and ask them to take care of it. We find out the next day that the majority of the water made its way into the oil pan, and living in ice cold illinois, it had turned into ice. Fantastic.

So we drain the oil, remove the oil pan, and let the car thaw in a warm shop for 2 days. Finally we get all the water out AND....it runs! With a horrible knock! You would have thought that with the oil pan off and all, we would've seen the bent rod, but no, we didn't. Not sure how that one slipped past.

Not that it mattered, because after it "ran" (it ran horribly backfiring and sputtering and shaking violently) is made a horrible bang and shut off. Yessir, the opti was bad!

Realizing this was going to cost me a fortune, I towed it up and hit up craigslist. A very long story being made as short as possible, I purchased a built motor.

I was skeptic at first because the motor is a 307...Weak right? I was shown the dyno sheets and saw that it made a good 364 hp with domed pistons, decked and port and polished heads, a fully forged rotating assembly, a massive cam and roller rockers. Oh, and it's got a holly double pumper (650 cfm) and a weiand intake.

Now the fun begins.

We're currently in the pulling the LT1 out stages. I've run into every problem I possibly could from shit breaking, fuel lines snapping (from 16 years of wear) and motor mount bolts rounding off.

First off, it's coming out the top. I'm still fighting with the motor mounts. Any tips? I'm guessing the steering rack must come out (the column is already out).

Also, any tips on unbolting it from the trans? I can't imagine that being to rediculously hard.

Ok, now, I am very concerned with how this new motor is going to fit. I'm sure I'll have to custom fabricate some new motor mounts, not a huge deal. I'm far more concerned with everything fitting under the firebird's cramped hood.

Will the distributor fit under the hood? I gotta think it's going to not fit under the cowl/windshield.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

My only suggestion would be to reconsider putting that 307 in there. Much less hassle with dropping an LT1 back in.

You would save yourself alot of money/heartache by just slapping another LT1 back in it or rebuilding the motor thats already in it. And during the rebuild/replacement would be a great time for some go-fast goodies.
