Non D-Port Headers

Posted By: nitropete On: 02-01-2009 @ 07:56:06         Reply | Edit
Is there some reason I cannot use non D-port headers on my lt1 swap? I lined-up the non Dport gaskets on my '93 alum. Lt1 heads and it appears there would be no exhaust restriction. The top curve of the lt1 head port lines up perfectly with the gasket. My heads also have two sets of header flange bolts on each end of the head so my '70-81 headers bolt right on. I realize I will have to weld in bungs for the O2 sensors. Do I need to distance the o2 sensors the same distance as they were located on the factory exhaust? or can they be relocated near the header collectors further downstream? The motor is going in a '48 ford F-1 pickup with a '81 camaro subframe intalled. I've had these coated headers on the shelf new-in-the-box for ten years and hate to let them sit any longer. Plus save myself some $. I appreciated the help. Thanks, Pete

There's no reason that you have to use D-shaped headers. There's a step change with D-port headers, so they don't match up in the first place. It sounds like they will work fine if the headers match closely to the port at the top, and then are larger than the port on the bottom as this is an optimum setup to prevent reversion. Make sure that none of the header will intrude into the exhaust port path.
