Fans won't turn on

Posted By: skylar_white91 On: 09-04-2008 @ 23:08:19         Reply | Edit
I have a 94 Camaro Z28. I put my new water pump and 160 T stat in along with new fan relays and a new water temp sensor.I also checked the fan fuses and they are still good but for some reason my fans wont turn on and my car overheats the fans normally kick on when the temp gauge hits the half way mark but it will climb higher than that now and still not turn on.

did you check the relays in the underhood fuse box?

If you have a test light, check for voltage at the fans when they "should" be on...

If nothing, trace backwards till you get power...

Why were the relays replaced to begin with? Were the others bad? How do you know they were bad?

They were replaced because they were bad.I tested them. But the thing about testing for voltage is that the fans will still kick on if you turn the ac on but for some reason they wont turn on when the car starts to get hot.And if you turn the ac off they go right back off with it.So dont know how much help that will be in helping you help me determine what is wrong with the damn fans but thanks for all your help and more is needed so please help!

That sounds like maybe the temp sensor is messed up... I think there are two temp sensors... One for the gauge and one for the fans... I don't remember for sure...

TSU 81

$15 at autozone

its on the waterpump

when it reaches certain temp it turns on fan, sometimes does not work. UNPLUG It and see if fans turn on

other one is under the exhaust manifold between 2 and 4 on the drivers side. that is TSU151m it is for the guage.

U need to change the temp sensor located on drivers side head between plugs. That should get your fans runnin. GM made these cars to run hot!!! Primary fan on at 222* sec. at 242*.

^This is the second thread where someone has already posted the CORRECT sensor location and you offer your bogus information. I posted a correction in the other thread almost 30 minutes before you posted the incorrect information again in this thread.

summit sells a fan relay kit. its 26 bucks its just the relay and the wiring theres no temp sensor to turn the fans on cuz they just come on with the ignition. thats what i got and the car never gets over 185 degrees and i got a 180 T.S cuz the 160 will trick the computer to thinking your car isnt warmed up all the way and you will waste more gas.

You must be the better man roadrage. Cause in my book there is 3. Other one at pump housing, and guage sender at radiator cap. I just fixed my fans changed the bogus info sensor location and they work. Maybe you should learn how to talk to people and your facts before you lay your bogus info.

Not that you have any idea of my technical knowledge (I've never seen you around in the 5 years I've been here), but maybe you'll be interested in a couple pics from a very widely known LT1 technical information source, Shoebox. Pics are linked directly from his page.

Here's a write up for troubleshooting cooling and fan problems if you keep scrolling.
http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#cooling
(Hint- It lists what sensors are used for what function as well as resistance readings per temp for testing.)

The only coolant sensor near the radiator cap is the coolant level sensor located just below it.
