tick tick tick...

Posted By: ScreaminEagle91 On: 08-25-2008 @ 16:34:46         Reply | Edit
BOOM? well i got a lifter tapping. ive already had them adjusted, so im assuming a bad lifter. Its not constant, but does is about 75% of the time. Im gonna try to save it with Lucas oil additive on my next change, and if that doesnt work, im gonna dump race oil in it (20W-50) I know 20w-50 isnt good for LT1s, but i gotta try somethin. any ideas? I still have Magnaflow catback in the box, but im hesitant to put it on due to the lifter noise. Any help would be awesome.

Thicker oil is not going to solve the problem.

You might as well pull the intake and valve covers
and fix it right. Thicker oil (or oil additives) are not going to fix a collapsed lifter, it may also cause other problems like washing your bearings out.

SO bite the bullet and buy a set of lifters (if thats the problem). You may also be looking at a bent pushrod.

Pull the pushrods out and roll them on a plate of glass or some other smooth surface and check for wobble.

You could easily do this on a weekend.

At what points does the engine not make the noise?

Now is a good time to upgrade to LS7/Caddy lifters. They'll come in handy later on for a cam swap.

The ticking comes and goes randomly. At idle its about 75% of the time. I think it does it under acceleration until about 2 grand, then from there I cant hear it, it could be drown out by all the other noise though. A cam swap is in the back of my mind, but im afraid to do such a big project if the car is goin to run fine with the lifter as it is. What damage could a bad lifter really do?

Are you sure it's not just an exhaust leak?

Exhaust leaks tick a lot like a lifter and sound like they are right in the valve covers... Sometimes the header gaskets can blow out the bottom so it's hard to see...

The only way I know to truly diagnose a lifter tick is to use a stethascope (sp?) held against the valve covers...

Put a wrench on each of the exaust manifold bolts and make sure none have snapped in two.

This is pretty common for the rear bolts to snap.

As for how much damage a bad lifter can do. Think catastrophic failure.

Check out that exhaust.

Just installed a set of the ls7 lifters on my car because I was having the same problem. The tick on mine was pretty noticable throughout driving it though. I pulled a valve cover and put a long flathead screw driver on each rocker and it was easy to hear the bad lifter out of the bunch. I replaced all of them just for reasurrance though. Now I've got a problem with my msd opti taking a s**t on me after 10 miles!

Ive been looking around online for the parts to fix this thing, and was hoping for some opinions. Ebay seemed like the best bet. I found these rockers: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/COMP-CAMS-MAGNUM-ROCKER-ARMS-LT1-SELF-ALIGN-1-6-1418-16_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247QQcategoryZ33614QQihZ003QQitemZ130220509937QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

These Lifters: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-Truck-Parts-Accessories__LUNATI-LT1-LT4-1993-97-HYDRAULIC-ROLLER-LIFTERS-70910_W0QQitemZ130249601095QQadnZCarQ20Q26Q20TruckQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQadiZ2865QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130249601095&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C65%3A1%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245

And these pushrods: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-Truck-Parts-Accessories__COMP-CAMS-HI-TECH-PUSHRODS-93-97-LT1-LT4-7940-16_W0QQitemZ140261283246QQadnZCarQ20Q26Q20TruckQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQadiZ2865QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item140261283246&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C65%3A1%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245

I figure that as long as Im chasing this lifter problem, I might as well do the pushrods just to be safe and the 1.6 rockers for the hell of it. Will there be any clearence issues with the rockers and valve covers? Any opinions on any of the valve train components I found on Ebay?
