55 mph vibration

Posted By: 94junker On: 08-06-2008 @ 08:38:37         Reply | Edit
i just recently changed my pads and rotors in my car all the way around
i stripped a lug nut in the rear but i put the lug nut back on a lil bit more than hand tight
and i cranked the others down nice and hard
now all of a sudden at about 50 it starts to vibrate in the steering wheel
and at about 55 it gets pretty crazy
it pulls to the right hard
the car already had existing steering issues
it was developing excessive play in the wheel
it gets worse when the weather is warmer???
now the brakes are working fine with no more pulsating and they feel really firm
but the way the car is acting it seems like the vibration is coming from the front not the back
cuz the car doesnt really vibrate its just mostly the wheel
but it makes it hard for me to keep it in my lane at like 60
i have the lug nut to replace and i will do it later on when i get outta work if it stops raining
but something tells me this vibration isnt goin to go away
oh i also want to add that i kinda figured i had a tie rod goin or i needed an alignment cuz when i took the front tire off the inside of the right tire was almost bald and the tire is brand new
its only like 2 inches of the very inside
but when i jack the car up the tire doesnt wiggle

the vibration sounds like its coming from the uneven tire wear. If its pulling that hard to the right get an alignment, and some new get-a-way treads.

check to see if your brake calipar is hanging up. see if the wheel gets really hot on a long stright run without using the brakes. rural country road.

ill see if its hangin up on my ride home
ill use the ebrake to stop
i dont see why it would be tire wear
cuz its really noticable
and it never did anything like this before

i put the new lug nut in last night
on my way home the car was squeaking severly
i thought it was the back right side
the side where i was missing the lug nut
but my girl rode with me after i replaced the nut and she said it was the front right so ill check that today
i did take off the back caliper and check it but it seems that the stationary side of the pad constantly rubs
and the piston side pad is the only one that doesnt constantly rub
but idk what to do to fix it

ok so i took the pads off and looked at them and its definetly the front side that was rubbing
but i cant see anything that i can do to fix it
i put the pads back in an pushed the caliper over so there was space between the inside pad and rotor
but it still rubs and squeaks horribly
it squeaks when im takin right turns but not when im taking left turns
and it squeaks horrible when im slowing down
i tried the e brake and it doenst squeak so its gotta be the front
the vibration is only between 50-60
and when i get over 60 it just goes away

Did you turn the new rotors? If not try that.
I had a similar problem in the right rear, I had drilled and slotted rotors and the offset was a little off so it would rub on the caliper bracket. Little grinding took my problems away.

for some reason it seems like the rotor is loose
cuz when i turn right it rubs
but when i turn left it is quiet
and when goin straight it is an off and on type of thing

but if the rotor was offset wouldnt it pulsate when i step on the brake?
so i took off the front rotor, looked at the pads for excessive wear and i greased the caliper alignment bolts and the slides with them
and i put the anti squeak shit on the back of the pads
i was almost sure it was the front right side
i know for a fact its the right side but now that i did that it still squeaks horribly and vibrates just like it did before
im thinkin i messed up my wheel bearing when taking the rotor off
i did hit it with a 3lb hammer from the backside
and i sprayed PB blaster all over the rotor

what are the chances that i killed my wheel bearing?

dude im having the same problem. i even hit mine with a hammer (thats when the trouble started), i had to change out wheek studs. i hve yet to figure out the prblem. i ended up just living with it. if you figure it out, please let me know, is the most annoying problem ever.

ive taken apart the front caliper and greased the slide pins and ive narrowed down the squeaking to the rear right rotor but idk if thats the source of the vibration
the rotor isnt out of round as far as i can tell
i think hitting the stud out with a 3lb hammer may have messed the bearings up
but im not 100% sure
it only vibrates from 50-60 and anything over or under it is fine

Given that your tire is wearing away prematurely on one side, I would put my money on an alignment problem... It's entirely possible that the vibration is from the tires trying to fight each other, either from too much toe-in or too much toe-out...

Sometimes common speed vibrations can also be caused by an out of balance driveshaft... The alignments are not very expensive though... And certainly less so than buying new tires all the time...

i know i have some steering components goin out
idk if its a ball joint or a tie rod end
but there is about 2 inches of play in the wheel and it never had that before
the play developed since last winter
as soon as i put my car back on the road i notice the play
but the vibration was never there
it started as soon as i put on the new rotors/brakes
and i also painted my calipers

I had this problem on my old formula (94). The upper ball joints where shot and causing the suspension to sort of "collapse" inward causeing the inside of the tire to wear and become out-of round. Just think of it like a shopping cart wheel that wobbles around due to the (-) caster/camber.
