pulling my auto trans?

Posted By: vesuvius66 On: 07-31-2008 @ 18:40:50         Reply | Edit
I'm going to be pulling out my own A4 for a rebuild. I'm just curious if one of you could point me in the direction of a really good internet guide, or if one of you knows the list of tools etc. I'll need. I've never pulled any transmission, so a good how to would be much appreciated.

real easy:

basic set of sockets, wrenches, get a few LONG extensions, floor jack, few jack stands, trans jack is ya got one. few screwdrivers.

start by putting the car on a few jackstands. hopefully ya know how to jack the car up, and where to put stands.

drain all the trans fluid by pulling the pan. its messy. ya don't have to drain it...but usally helps if doin this by yourself.

disconnect the battery

pull the starter off

disconnect any connectors you can get to, cooling lines, etc.

take the inspection cover off and un bolt the 3 torque converter bolts. the cover has four bolts holind in place

take the drive shaft out.

unbolt the torque arm from the trans

i forget all the sizes, but put either a trans jack or floor jack with some wood on it and get under the trans. becareful not to crush the pan, just watch where ya put the jack. just support it and unbolt the crossmember. you can leave the mount nut on.

let the trans fall a few inches. take the bell housing bolts off. theres 6 i belive. ones a real pain in the a$$ to get. left side towards the top. i used a wrench for that.

slowly and carfully pull the trans away

ya did it! im sure i am forgettin a few things...just doing this real fast for some help.

good luck!

Only a Camaro can be a Z28

1/2 line wrenches for the cooling lines.

9/16 for the bell housing and torque converter bolts.

x91 perty much covered it!

You may be able to get the top 3 bolts of the bell housing from the top side of the engine(before you let the trans doun a few inches).
