opti issue - not sure

Posted By: igoslow2 On: 05-09-2008 @ 23:54:55         Reply | Edit
Well my 95 TA sat for 2 weeks and i go to crank it to drive it to work today and it seems that it isn't getting any spark. There were no symptoms prior to this morning (and I replaced the opti just over a year ago)

It turns over well but never hits until I let off the starter and it seems to "stutter" almost like a carb will "diesel" - that was strange to me and has me confused....any ideas? It is definitely getting fuel (based on the smell at least!)

This would be the third opti.....the others went out gradually or at least kicked some codes...

If it is the opti - MSD or ACDelco? Thanks guys - Brian

Check to make sure the connector on the OPTI is not corroded.

AC Delco OPTI - Always.

Before spending the cash on an opti, make sure you really arent getting spark... Pull a plug, connect the wire to it, and with rubber (or other elec safe type) plyers hold the threads of the plug against the block or some other ground and have someone hit the key... You should see it make little zappies...

update - well I figured I would try it again this am, and after it turned over 4-5 times, it fired up....rough, but it ran....when it came up to norm op temp I drove it up the road...it ran ok but when I tried to see if would pull in high gear (but slow)it stumbled really bad.....i'm wondering if I have a bad plug somewhere....any other thoughts as to why this may happen - would a weak coil act like this also?

ps....until it was warm, throttle made it want to stumble, but then it was fine under WOT - ran pretty good actually....when I turned it off and tried to restart, it hesitated, but then started up after it turned over 2-3 times... when i blurped the trottle it would pop once just a little out the pipes - different than normal

check the coil/ICM, mine went bad and had similar symptoms in my roadmaster.

and if its the opti, go ac delco.
