ok, the trany in my car is out of a buick roadmaster but its still a 4L60E. is this the same trany as what they put in the camaros because i was told the ones they put in the camaros have more clutch discs or something
wud it be worth the time and money to put a aluminum trany pan and some good fluid to keep it cooler and last longer and whats the best fluid to get also i was told that its not a good idea to change the fluid in a automatic trany because theirs a good chance it will go out?
also, where is a good place to get a performance transmision -- 95 camaro Z28 stock for now but a 383 is in the works

The difference between the two is the amount of holding power applied by the clutch discs. The one you took out of the buick probably was designed with the elderly in mind who rarely if ever step hard on the gas. For that reason, there are probably less clutch discs. Now, if you go and floor it repeatedly, there's a good chance you're getting some slippage (how much, I don't know) so I'd be careful.
As for a trans flush, I just flushed mine out at 100k and have not seen a single problem. In fact, I found it VERY beneficial, apparently my trans filter had come lose and was just laying in the bottom of my trans pan. Yikes. hahaha.

Unless you're familiar with the 4L60e, I wouldn't mess around with it. If you are familiar, you need to drop the pan out and dump the fluid, and then fill it up with the proper amount of trans fluid. While the pan is out, replace the filter and inspect the bottom of the pan(there should be a magnet in there) for large metal chunks. It's NORMAL for there to be some minor debris in the bottom of the pan, small metal shavings, stuff like that. However, if there's anything big, take it to the dealer ship right away for service.
As for fluid, I ALWAYS go with OEM which is usually Dexron (check which number) for GM. How ever, if you have mods done to the trans (shift kit, stuff like that), go with an aftermarket performance fluid.

That's funny I was just going on here to ask the same question...I just put a new tranny in last night. This guy I know that owns a shop highly recomended the Dexron Mercon VI which is synthetic. The guy at Advance said DO NOT mix synthetic with regular though. Not sure if he's right or not. Anyone know about this? How many quarts of fluid does the converter hold (stock)? I picked it up from the shop, but when I got home I tried to put some fluid in it...it would only take about a half quart. Looked like there was something in it already...do they normally come with fluid in them? Sorry for asking questions on the same thread, but I figured it was better than starting a new one on the same topic. Thanks. -- 97 white Z28.
