i have a 1996 firebird lt1 that is in need of a tune up i plan to do plugs and wires, fuel filter, and cap. I have already switched to a k&n cold air intake. most of this work i can do myself. plugs on the other hand my garage wants almost $500 to do because of the rear 2 as most of you already know. my question as dumb as it may sound is can i change the 6 i can get to and hope that my bad plug is one of them and wait till it goes up to do the other. Also any other things i should pick up to help general running of car. Any plugs and wires brands that run better in pontiac.

You can change every singe one from the top using a 3/8 drive wrench and a deep socket 5/8. Its a tight fit, and you have to use your hands as eyes, but lots of ppl do it.
Just do a couple of searches on this site for "changing plugs".
Or find another shop that will do it cheaper. If a shop with a list tells you its going to be difficult, well idunno, I would look elsewhere. --

Its a bitch but doable, just take you time, gets a couple swivels and a couple different spark plug sockets and wreches that it on the ends. You can get them all out with that. --

Plug wise?
I run NGK. No one has any evidence that one plug is better than any other. I would personally stay away from the Plugs that use the platinum pucks, as the pucks can come loose and go.....? --

stock is .050 I believe. It'll say on your emissions sticker under the hood. If you are not stock or running an aftermarket ignition you can adjust accordingly. --

I pulled all but two out of the top when I changed my plugs. All the driver's side were fairly easy to get to. The passenger side was a pain. I dropped the starter and pulled the alternator. Took the rear two on the pass. side out from the bottom, and pulled the front two from the top. The one under the alternator was blind. I never saw the plug hole. I used NGK as well with Jeg's branded 7mm wires. Runs great. --

I am not going to lie, changing the plugs is a bitch. If it is your first time doing it expect it to take 3.5 - 5 hours, including the wires. Add in changing the opti and having to remove the water pump / bleeding off the coolant, you just added another chunk of time. Buy a 12 pack and have a friend come over, it might take a while.
