Speedometer stopped working and reverse won't work.

Posted By: eliotz28 On: 04-29-2008 @ 22:03:49         Reply | Edit
On my way to work, the speedometer stoped working, just dropped straight to 0. I parked, then tried to back out of my parking spot. The transmission would only shift into 5th gear and move forward. After playing with the shifter, I was able to move into reverse by using my leg and hand to force in to the right, and then it went up like normal. There is still heavy resistance everytime i put it in reverse, doesn't feel like I am breaking anything. So I figured my VSS is bad, but now am wondering if something else is the matter since I am having issues with the solenoid or whatever for my reverse gear. What input do you guys have?

Just wanted to add that my SES light was on, had it scanned and it comes up with VSS malfunction. Bad or low circuit??

Also, just noticed tonight that the odometer is not adding but I guess since the speedometer is reading 0, the PCM thinks the car isn't moving.

Anyway, I hope someone can offer someone input on this issue. thanks

I wish I could help some... I don't know much about the t-56, but as far as the speedo, it sounds like your speed sender is shot... it should be the thing screwed into the tailshaft of the transmission with wires coming out... Might be worth checking the resistence there...

sounds just like my t56, i have to hold it in reverse to work and if i dont have the right amount of brake applied to hold the car where the tranny wants it, it just grinds the gears and won't go into reverse, hopefully that makes sense

Lt4Weeda: Sounds like a synchro in your case.

EliotZ28: Wonder if the sending unit is bad or the gear inside is messed up. Not sure why you can't shift properly. You'll probably be better off to either drop the tranny and take it to a shop or get the whole car there. Dropping the tranny yourself will save you some money.

Good Luck

If the "gear" that drives the VSS is bad, how would tat be fixed? Also, is there anything related with the VSS and locout selenoid both stop working at the same time??
