460LE woes ('94 Camaro) WOT only

Posted By: Diamhea On: 04-22-2008 @ 01:47:28         Reply | Edit
This is a well documented issue and hours of reading other forums' posts have yet to give me a clear cut explanation for this. I've seen tons of other F-Body owners complaining of this, and it renders our cars basically useless in a race.

I'll spare you a length explanation, but heres the jist of it:

4L60E, 105k miles. Shifts smooth and perfect at any speed other than WOT. Whether I be going from a roll, or from a stop, hitting the gas to the floor and getting the car to downshift (I think?) results in normal results...that is until I get to the end of the gear. THE CAR WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF 1ST, it just hits the rev limiter at ~6.5k UNTIL I let off of the gas ever-so-little; then when I press back down it shifts. I've heard tons of tales of this happening to Camaros and Firebirds on the drag strip. Its also worth noting that this doesn't happen all of the time; but still seems to be revving far too high before the shift.

Some say its the trans linkage under the car, I've already adjusted that once but haven't seen enough of an improvement to consider it fixed. What are you guys' thoughts on this? Cheers.

Slipiddy do da. You trans is slipping. Time for a rebuild.

Seriously though, check for proper fluid level. Do this by leaving the car running in PARK whilst on level grownd and also the car needs to be a full operating temp. If your are a quart or two low it could cause the problems you are having.

@ 105k miles, Id be expecting a rebuild. Have you ever had the transmission serviced? I.E. change the fluid and filter?

I'm doing that today, I can't afford a new trans so I'm going to try everything else. Some say its the TPS; others say vacumn line. This will be a long ordeal.

Went to Jiffy Lube and although my trans fluid is fairly hot, he suggested I don't flush it due to the high mileage. He directed me to a local transmission shop. They checked my car out for free and determined that there are two problems:

Throttle position sensor is messed up

and torque converter was "stuck" one way or another. Either way, this is good news considering what I expected. Thoughts on either of these?

I'd start with the TPS. Make sure your voltage is in the specified range. Here is a link to a great step by step artical.

I've experienced eractic shifting like that before with a brand new transmission. The TPS was the problem for me.

ALL the TPS sensor will do is make it hit the "stall wall". It will put the trans in a limp mode, in 3rd gear only. Will make it take FOR EVER to got from a stop to crusing speed.

BUT this will shut off after the car is turned off and turned on.

What the poster is describing is a mechanical issue. one I am quite firmilar with, about almost 4k in 2 4LjunkiE rebuilds.

If it wont upshift to 2nd in different throttle positions, its a slipping issue.

I had altough at one time, too much firminess in the tune and a transgo shift kit and at WOT in 4th, it would down shift and never allow an upshift to continue on into 4th.

Heres a topic in another forum depicting how the trans linkage cable may cause this. I'm not in denial about the transmission dying (like many are). I fully expect that its possible; I just don't want to commit to that mindset just yet because I have read so many other possible variables.

Add another 4L60e to the list! My 95 is doing the same thing. No matter how I shift, if its to the floor, will not upshift smoothly. Bangs off the rev limiter several times, and finally goes into gear. It just started in the 1-2 shift. Was only happening in the 2-3 and 3-4. I hope you all can figure this out.

You misunderstood me a bit. My tranny does it at WOT only. But no matter how I shift, whether its manually 1,2,3,4, leave it in drive, or just kick it down from a roll, at WOT it bangs the rev limiter before it shifts. Somedays it worse than others. I was wondering if it would be best to rebuild the transmission that is doing this or beef up my back up transmission?
