A light on my dash, which i suppose is the low coolant since i dont have a owners manual, has been coming on and goin off randomly. Where is this sensor located? i think my car is losing coolant, but im gonna flush the system as soon as it warms up, so im not that concerned, and my car has yet to climb much above 185 degrees. is it common for the sensor to take a crap? --

What makes you thing the engine is losing coolant? Have you checked the level in the radiator when the low coolant light comes on? --

yea, i have been checking it, and it has been a lil low, but the low coolant light comes on when im driving, and then goes off as soon as i shut the car down and turn the key back on. i think the cold weather may have something to do with it. regardless, ill be flushing the system as soon as the cold weather breaks. theres no puddles underneath the car, and it never runs hot, so im not to worried. when i bought the car, the previous owner told me he had a water pump put on it a while back, so i know the car was overheated at one point. the coolant is kinda nasty n brown with a bunch of nasty rust particles in it, nothing to outta the ordinary, but it seems a lil nasty --

If you can mustard yourself to do it it's less than $100 for parts. I'd recommend finding someone who will do it for a case of beer if you cant do it yourself. You'll get robbed if you take it somewhere to do it. --

i thought i had blown a headgasket today cause the low coolant sensor kept coming on then i would fill it up and it would turn off. then i wouldnt shut off at all. so i finally think that my sensor is gone thanks to this thread. thank you. then i looked at how the sensor works consulted a couple of buddies and tapped the sensor and the light went off. so i guess the float gets stuck from time to time then you can just tap it and its off. and i owe it all to this thread thank you.

The sensor gets dirty sometimes you can take it out and clean it and that will fix your problem. Otherwise just replace. I was able to clean the gunk off and my low coolant lite went off.

Auto parts store wanted $58 for a new sensor. I just unpluged it and tied it off. No more light going on and off. I use the temp gauge instead like the old timers use to do. -- Brian Stewart
