Tuning "To Do" List

Posted By: LT1JAG On: 01-04-2008 @ 15:07:49         Reply | Edit
Ok, thought I would start out the project with a few things.
Please add to this list, I do not claim to know everything about tuning PCM's, I'm just a tinkerer and I can share the few things I know and hopefully others can add to it.

Assumtions:
You have a laptop.
You have a program to Datalog with.
You have a Excel type Spreadsheet program.
You have a program to Tune with.
You have the cables to hook up to your PCM.
E-mail or phone number of a good buddy to call when you screw up!

Understand that this is not a single Saturday project. It's an ongoing thing, hopefully you will get to the point of "This is good enough"!

You have a good running engine!
A new tune up with all the parts.
No vacume leaks.
13.2 plus volts while engine is running.
No exhaust leaks.
No error codes AT ALL.
A basic understanding how an EFI engine works.
And a MAJOR item is that you take ALL responcibility in knowing that you can do damage to your engine if you do not know what your doing!

Datalogging:

A must!
This is a safe thing to do, you really can't screw up doing this. Nothing harder than plugging in a scanner.
Datalog the car, not for four or five minutes either. A good 20 to 30 minute drive with WOT, Cruise, idle. And not just one, multiple runs in different temps and conditions.
Also, as a baseline, get a good idea of your gas mileage before you start. A few runs down the local strip wouldn't hurt either. Keep your slips!

Tuning:
List of things to change:
ECM Switch table
ECM Constant table

List of things to tune.
Volumetric Efficiency
Spark Tables
MAF Sensor Calibration Tables
%Change to Fuel/Air Ratio (you will need a Wideband for this)

Ok, It's a START, now it's your turn to add to this list!

I suggest copy mine and re-post with your additions.
Hopefully as time goes by we will have a nice list put together.

A very good start

I would like to get into learning how to tune. I have the software and the cable, but do not have a laptop yet. I have just been using my desktop in the garage. I have not done any actual tuning though, just changes in the ECM switch and constant tables.

OK I haven't heard of too many LT1 Jags, and a guy I know sold one within the last year or two so was just wondering.

I'm new to the lt engine just got my first one a month ago and i know i got a real project in hand. I was just wondering what kind of tuning i need to do if i intall a new fuel pressure regulator? and if anyone has any advice on a good company to go with for programmers or if anyone sells a kit with a program and cables and whatnot.

Posted By: LT1JAG On: 05-10-2008 @ 10:39:08     Reply | Top | Edit
New Pressure reg won't make much of a diff if it's OEM
Adjustable need to be set at Factory spec to begin with.
Programer, cables , datalogger.

I use Tuner Cat to program with, Datamaster to datalog and I got my cables from Craig Moates, Moates.net

Not saying this is the best, just what I use.
There are others, check them out before you buy.
