Hey guys, new to this board, came looking for some help. Just bought a ragged out, blown up 93z28. I am not a FI guy and am wanting to put a small block with a carb. Somebody told me that I will have clearance issues with the firewall. Has anybody in here done this swap successfully???
Thanks
Brendan

GM Performance Parts sells a carb intake for
LT1s or you can always convert a gen 1 intake to
work with the LT1. one way to score some
clearance is to run a crab style distributor --

Yes you can use a 1st gen sb with a rear distributer as im doing itwith no mods to the firewall whatsoever, not only that but im also running a ford adapt a cap on top of my msd pro billit distributer and that thing is extra tall.check out how close my carb is in the pics below to the windshield,it wouldnt be that bad with a duel plane and a regular holly carb though as im running an extra tall super victor intake and a dominator.davidr please be sure of the facts before you post. --

The crab style distributor he is talking about is like the ones used on the 96-99 vortech 5.7. The ones with the plug wire connections coming off the sides of a flat top cap.

Not even needed, just get a mallory or msd it fits fine, and can even be pulled easy with the engine left in place --

Are we saying you can put a dist in the rear of a LT1 motor and use an intake (ported) to fit the LT1 motor? I know we can put a older style small block in without to much trouble, need a 4 in cowl and a little hitting on the fire wall to get dist in. But this is the first I have seen were you convert an LT1 to rear dist and carb, or did I miss something. -- http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2459481

That can be done as well with a lot of work that would hardly be worth it unless you really wanted a single plane and distributer. He was asking about a 1st gen sb swap as his LT1 was toast --

Thanks for the pictures. I also have installed a carbureted motor in a 1994 Camaro. It will be a full time trailered race car. I have also cut out for the carburetor as you have. I am in the proces of selecting a place for the fuel cell and relocating the battery to the rear. I notice that you have your filter system installed under the rear and I assume you have a fuel cell. Would you please describe how and where you installed the fuel cell assuming you installed it so that that you have gravity feed to the electric fuel pump. I would also be grateful if you could post some pics.

No fuel cell,I welded a handmade sump to the bottom of the stock tank to draw fuel better.Summit sells a sump kit that could be welded on or you could get a tall thin cell and mount it in the hatch area but you would need to build a firewall to keep it tech legal for the strip. --

Thanks for your help.I have already removed the stock tank so I will go with the fuel cell in the hatch area. Just didn't want to "reinvent the wheel" if you already had an NHRA approved fuel cell setup that I could have plagiarized. By the way, nice looking car and compliments on the neatly setup engine compartment.

n20ta2 WOW what a sweet ride. I love the engine bay and would love to do the same to my 94Z28. My question is this. Are you still able to keep your stock guages functional and if so is it extremely complicated to do so? I'm thinking of putting an edelbrock 383 crate motor in the place my LT1 currently resides. Any Suggestions would be appreciated.
