Spark Plug Wires Arcing

I just started my 1995 Z28 in the pitch dark and found that spark plug wire #3 and #5 were arcing. I then replaced the plugs on #3 and #5 with brand new AC Delcos and the problem did not go away. Also, I could see faint arcing on the ignition coil wire both at the optispark end and at the igntion coil itself. What gives? Any suggestions? --

you replaced the spark plugs or the wires?? are the wires routed properly away from your headers. if your opti to coil wire is connected properly and it's doing that you need to replace it also. -- 1984 Camaro Berlinetta- 358 (.040 over)

Here is the deal. After about 5000 miles since the AS&M ceramic coated headers I have burned four plug wires. I have the woven protective boot protectors and the DEI wire sheathing on #5,6,7,8 yet they all burned. I replaced all of these plug wires and the car is running strong again with no spark retard. Eventually I am going to route the wires on the valve covers. Does anyone know where I can find the best hardware for this?
However, there is a distinct clicking noise on the drivers side that I can hear from inside the car at idle which I think is spark plug #3 arcing. At night, I can see arcing around #3 and also at both ends of the ignition coil wire. The arcing at the ignition coil wire is not as extreme as #3. Yes, I have replaced the spark plug and wire on #3. Could a bad ignition coil be causing this? I have never seen anything like this before. --

a cracked coil could but I doubt it's cracked, it's usually an insecure wire or a burnt one. For the wire burning situation try zip tieing the wires to each other to make a straight path to the opti without slack, then deal with the slack after they are away from the headers -- 1984 Camaro Berlinetta- 358 (.040 over)

The plug wires are not zipped together but I think I am going to go ahead and replace the coil as I am still seeing arcing on the ignition coil wire. I can't imagine a coil is too expensive. --

arc is caused by high resistance. This means that somewhere along the line there is high resistance of a connection. Suspect any part or contact point along the line between the coil tower and the plugs. A lean running motor can create high resistance in the combustion chambers and produce arcing as well. -- Owner of HBHRacing.com Xtreme performance products
