torque converter

Posted By: 95z28guy On: 01-03-2008 @ 18:25:32         Reply | Edit
I don't know much on torque converters so I'm asking for a little help on deciding between a lock up or non-lock up. I've narrowed it down to TCI Streetfighter w/3000 stall. I just need to decide between lock up or not. What are some advantages/disadvantages?
Thanks

If you value your gas mileage and driving the car at all on the street, you'll get a lockup converter.

Alright so I guess I'm going with the lockup... gas mileage is already bad enough. BTW do you mean gas mileage will increase with a lockup and decrease without it? Or will it decrease with either choice just not as bad with a lockup?

Your fuel economy will suffer significantly without lockup. Stock converters are a lockup design.

Thanks for that site. It's got a lot of useful info, I learned a lot in like 5 minutes. Well, I'll take a look at those converters and make a decision sometime here soon. No rush though because I'm going to wait until I get the LE2 kit from Lloyd. I just want to make sure I'm prepared ahead of time.
Thanks

I recently purchased a converter from TCI (3600) for my LS1. In my LT1 I also had a TCI (3500) Best converter for the money IMO. Has good driveability, with lockup! This converter rocks! I couldnt imagine having a converter without LOCKUP! By far the best "bolt on" for an AUTO!

TCI!

Interesting site you have listed. Do you have one of their "fuddle" converters or know someone who does. I'm prolly going with a vigilante for my next tranny but if I can get one with the same warranty and quality for $200 cheaper like they have listed then I might do it.

I wanted to try a VIG but had a hard time coughin up the extra 200 + when I knew the TCI would flat out ROCK! I swear by this converter .7 tenths off my time! I have a feeling!

My previous one took .6 off and that was on a lowely LT1

Lock up for sure but you are most likely going to end up with computer issues with anything over 2800 rpm stall, pre 97 Lt1's suffer from the dreaded stall wall issue that will not allow the engine to shift out of first gear at full throttle.I would try to use a 2800 stall to avoid this problem unless pcm for less or other tuners has developed a fix for it but they hadent as of a few years ago.

I had the problem with my 4L60e and a 3000 stall and ended up blowing the trans and almost my motor as I was spraying nitrous at the top of first when it nailed the rev limiter, not good.Again for a stock car 200 rpm is not going to make a difference Roll the dice if you want.

There's a fix for it. Just a matter of changing the tranny shift tables up a bit. PCMforless can do this or some of us back yard tuners can do it too. It's just a small issue with the pcm.

Anyone used Fuddle racing torque converters before?

Thanks for all the help guys. I guess I'll definately get a tune from PCMforless and talk to them about that "stall wall" and see what they can do with it. I'm going to need a tune anyways for all the mods I'm adding in the next few months.

My car is a 95,and I was mistaken about pcmforless not having a fix for it as I now recall sending the pcm back to bryan when I install a bigger cam then my old cc305 but it wasnt fool proof as I still had problems after Bryan worked on it for my GM 847 cam.I sent it back a couple times but still had issues so I went with a TH350 and a 3500 stall.I also dismantled the entire trans and found it in perfect shape so it was definetly in the pcm.He may have issues and he may not im just informing on what could happen, good luck.

Yea, I have one of the fuddle racing converters. It's got lockup, and the anti-ballooning plates for the spray my cars sees occasionally at the track. It's big right now but Im planning on doing a cam in a few weeks as well.

Ordered the vigilante 3200 stall yesterday cuzz it took Fuddle racing 2 days to get back to me. Plus I got a military discount that's realy good with the vigilante torque converter. Not to mention the fact that they rate their torque converters at 1600 hp and Fuddles is rated to 550ft/lb of torque on the one I was looking at. I'll be putting out about 200 more ft/lb of torque then that on the nitrous. Overall the Vig. for the quality and price ratio I think is about the best I could get. 1600hp rated TQ with the works for $680 shipped to my door........can't beat that.
