fuel pump relay

Posted By: No_snow On: 06-27-2009 @ 23:26:42         Reply | Edit
My neighbor has a 00 Z28 with a hard start situation when cold.It happens about twice a week thus far. It turns over fine, but no fire. No codes and no other issues. The plugs have about 10k on them. the two I pulled looked fine. We did the fuel filter with no help. I can hear the fuel pump priming the days I started it. Im still thinking spark or fuel. If the pump checks out, could the relay be bad? Is there anything else I can check?

What exactly does it do? Just starts hard after sitting a while? Starts REALLY hard and you have to fight it to get it running? More details would be nice. If it starts hard after sitting a while I would lean towards a pump starting to fail. Try to monitor the fuel pressure at the rail. If it bleeds down over time then you have a pump failing or an injector bleeding down and even a possible leak. Typically when a pump fails it bleeds down into the tank. How many miles on this car?

Correct, after sitting awhile, like over night, it will turn over for 4 or 5 seconds with no fire. After two or three times of this, it fires and runs normally. The car has 75k on it. I dont have a fuel pressure gauge, I would like her to leave it with a mechanic for a few days and let him try to start it before any parts are changed.

Sounds like a pump, especially if you don't see any leaks.
