A few quirks on my Z28

Posted By: phoenixbabe On: 05-20-2009 @ 20:20:31         Reply | Edit
Over the passed few months I’ve noticed a few quirks on my 98 Z28. Nothing I imagine that would directly impede the function of my vehicle, but they are getting more annoying.

First, when I try to click over to my brights, the lever won’t click. If I click the lever hard enough, it will switch to the brights, but won’t switch back without a fight. I’m certain that it’s just the lever itself because my lights function just fine otherwise. I’m wondering if replacing this lever requires just the lever itself or if I have to mess with the entire steering column. BTW: my car is a no options model, so I’m not sure if most turn signal levers out there have features that mine doesn’t, and therefore may not function the same or what-have-you.

I’ve also noticed my interior and exterior lights flickering faintly. My first inclination says it’s my alternator, since I haven’t messed with that since I’ve owned it (4-5 years now). I replaced my battery about three years ago, so it’s about time for a change, but my voltage reads just fine. Another odd thing is that my aftermarket headunit doesn’t flicker at all, just my factory lights. My idle doesn’t change and my car doesn’t feel like it’s going to stall out, and it starts up without a hitch, so I’m a little stumped.

Lastly, my car has an odd tremble almost every time I go to a drive-thru car wash. After the car wash does it’s thing, and I let go of the brake to roll out, my Camaro has a peculiar tremble, but only momentarily. At first I thought it was my Nittos failing to grip on the wet concrete, but after a few times, I definitely wasn’t coming from my tires. It appears that this issue has no relation to my lights flickering, nor does it impact my idle, or anything else. I do wonder if maybe it’s my MAF trying to adjust to frequent/drastic changes in temperature at the car wash, or if it’s possibly an issue I am not aware of.

Any advice guys n gals??? Thanks in advance!

1: sounds like the multifunction lever is bad. I don't know how to replace it. I think the wheel needs to come off. Time to check the FSM or pay someone.

2: Check your grounds and battery cables for tightness or corosion.

3: Try cleaning your mass air flow sensor with mas air sensor cleaner from the parts store.

Sorry for not being more help.

Adding to daves thoughts:
1. Yeah, the switch in the column is going ( most times referred to as just the turn signal switch), I've seen some with just a little cam under the switch that fails, so it may not be the switch itself. Either way it requires getting into the column.

2. My car does the same thing. Í asked about it a few years back and was told it is normal......could be a voltage regulator going bad but it could take years to fail. Good idea to at least check the major connections like Dave said.

3. Do you get the underbody wash? I agree that the MAF could be getting dirty, but when I hear water and engine stumble....my brain says to check spark plug wires and connections. A split plug wire or boot will create a tremble....then quickly go away as the boot/wire dries in the warm engine compartment. Usually a misfire code will accompany this but if it's not for a long period of time, or driving down the road, the ECM may not catch it during a car wash.

How many miles? When was the last service check-up?

My switch does the same thing, but sometimes it works just fine. It does suck when traveling down a busy country road at night.

My Turn Switch acts the same way, i have to move the wheel angle up a notch in order for it to click into brights position. Such a small issue tho, almost not worth fixing unless cheep.

I havent looked into the price on one of these switches, anyone have any idea how much they run?

I had the same problem with my switch not working and it turned out to be the big round housing that had broken and the switch when you would pull on it had too much play so it would not engage properly. Check if the plastic housing is broken before wasting money on the switch itself.

I just repaired the housing and it works fine now

The switch on mine was the switch itself had moved. When you pulled it you could never get it to "click." Turned out the switch was pushed back just a bit.

What I did to fix it:
Disable Air Bags, drop the column (lay steering wheel in driver's seat,) you will be able to see the switch near the base of the column, my LT1 had two 8mm bolts that were blind. DO NOT DROP THESE. Loosen them just enough to pull the switch up toward the lever, a bit and tighten them. Check to see if it will "click," reinstall column.

This is what I had to do to fix my issue.
