Data Link Connector Problems

Posted By: jjaurs On: 07-01-2008 @ 01:41:57         Reply | Edit
I have a 1998 z28 and I cannot get a readout from the dlc. I have no idea whether the guy who owned it before me put a programmer chip in it or not. Could this be the problem, and if so would it be a good idea to go ahead and buy a programmer instead of replacing with a stock chip. I have checked all of the fuses and they are good. It is not displaying an SES light, but the way it is running I know it should be throwing some sort of code if not multiple codes (it misfires, backfires, runs rich, and idles high). I've tried every course of action I know and nothing is working so far, PLEASE HELP! Thanks for the help in advance, and please go easy on me I'm a noob!

Did you check the fuse?

First of all, check all of the connectors and sensors in the intake. If one of these is out it is possible it will not throw a code and it could cause the car to do things you described. The computers on these cars are programmable. Did the previous owner say he used to modify and race the car? If so, it is possible he used a program such as LS1 Edit to program the computer to his performance needs. You could buy a programmer, or you could take it to a specialty shop to have it programmed for you. Replacing the entire PCM with a stock one will cost you an arm and a leg unless you can get one from a junk yard (mostly likely it will not work properly for your specific application). There is a place near Lubbock (not sure how far Abeline is from there) called Texas-Speed.com They should have everything you need for your Z. Hope this helps.

Thanks I'll test those sensors and I still need to test my O2 sensors which are probably shot since the engine's been running rich for so long. I still have the problem of the Data Link Connector not booting up my handheld diagnostics code reader though, if anyone knows why it would have no power supplied to it please let me know. I assume since the computer in the car can be tuned (that's something I didn't know, I thought you had to buy a programmable chip) that is not the reason the SES light isn't coming on, it must just be the wiring to the dash lights or the bulb.

I got her fixed today. Turns out my handheld diagnostics machine died and that's why it wasn't pulling information up. I borrowed my uncle's and it gave a throttle position sensor code. I replaced it and the connector and that fixed the high idle. I checked the O2 sensors all were good. I cleaned the Mass Air Flow Sensor and that fixed the misfire and it no longer runs as rich. It still backfires though (has no cats). I hope this information can help somebody. It developed a new problem through all of this though, now it turns over slowly even when the battery is fully charged, any ideas.

You may want to start a new post, not too many people are going to read through all this to help you with your new problem. I don't have any ideas either. Maybe bad starter?
