I have read about the fix for the nylon gear in the headlight motor but no one has mentioned why the headlights pop up when you turn on the running lights only. Is that just some weird side effect from the stripped gear? It seems odd that it would cause this to happen. Of course it is GM after all. I am probably going to get the brass gears, seems a lot cheaper than an over priced motor that will end up with the same problem.

Yeah its just some weird side effect. I cant tell you why the lights go crazy when the motors get worn -- Former ride: 531RWHP/477RWTQ Only bolt ons! ...technically everything used a bolt to install

If the light is in the off position and go to running lights, it does not come up. IF it was in the On position and turns down to running lights, they stay up. It is indeed weird. -- 2002 Navy Blue Metallic Trans-Am, 6 Speed, Leather, T-tops. SLP Flow Pack, M/T Street Radials, Free Mods, otherwise stock. Moser 12-bolt and BMR Suspension

^^^ That's a different situation, but it's actually a feature so you can mess with the headlights if needed without them being on. --

I read about the metal motor housing coming loose from the plastic gear housing. I noticed mine has done this and I started wondering if that is the main cause for the gear stripping? I read that there are metal tabs that need to be bent back in place to hold the housings together. Does anyone know of a perminant fix to stop this from happening again?

i have a 99. the lights started freakin' out. i removed the motor and noticed the gear assembly had started to separate from the rest of the housing. no big deal. i just pressed it back together. i also have an 89. i came up with a solution to fix those motors when they go.
