2002 Trans Am WS6 slight engine noise when cold

Posted By: cmeseadoin On: 01-04-2008 @ 21:56:12         Reply | Edit
Hey guys, I have a mint condition 2002 WS-6 with the LS-1 and it has about 24K on it now. The car has been babied and never raced, just played with. I have noticed for quite a while that the engine tend to have a slight lifter or piston tap or some type of slight noise to it and it is mainly when cold. If I open the hood, you can hear a little noise and perhaps it could be something in the valve train. It seems to somewhat go away when hot, but never really completely. I really don't think there is anything wrong with it, it runs great. I was just curious if those LS-1's were famous for this? Any thoughts?

Welcome to piston slap...

I don't have it, but it's common (I don't have the oil consumption either, but that's fairly common too).

Yeah, I have noticed it for quite a while with mine. I can open the hood and rev the rpms just a little from idle with the throttle butterfly and the noise sounds to me like some lifter lash. I would def. say valve train rather than piston noise but like I said, it runs great..and it does not burn any oil at all. You cannot hear it when you are driving the car and everything else is fine. I was just concerned because it is def. a noise in the engine.

I guess it is like the rear end in the car, LOL....I have had a slight bearing noise esp. when turning corners since having the car for a few years, but it never gets worse. I have heard stock rear ends are a weak point on these fbods too but she seems fine.

I would like to at least consider putting a little more aggressive camshaft in this car....I love the sound of a more rough idle...but I really do not know a lot about that. Could some of you guys in the know make some recommendation in concert with HP and Torque gains? I am fairly much stock with regards to the engine except for the stuff listed on my profile line. I am very mechanical and have 7 cars, I do pretty much anything but I have little experience tearing down engines. I am wondering how much work it is in one of these f-body 5.7's to put a cam in and what computer changes would be needed. Can you just swap cams and whatever else is needed and gain a fair amount of power / torque in various places in the peak hp/torque curves? Please advise! Thank you!

Chris,

I have just had a cam swap along with Hooker LT headers, Hooker Y Pipe, Deleted Cats, magnaflow exhaust, COMP Cam 224 224 581 581 114LSA, LS6 Manifold, SLP underdrive pulley and a DYNO tune.

I picked up 80 RWHP and a much better torque curve. I picked up 35 pounds of torque at the rear wheels. My torque curve stays pretty constant from 2500 RPMs to 6200 RPMs.

I am currently dynoing 372 RWHP and 360 foot pounds of torque at the wheels.

I also have CAI, RAM Air hood, SLP smooth belows, throttle body bypass, 160 degree stat, SLP lid and K&N filter.

I love the way my car sounds now.

Hope this is helpful.

Yes that is helpful, what did all of that cost you and did you do all of the work yourself? Can you explain the "COMP Cam 224 224 581 581 114LSA?" I know that those numbers mean something with respect to the lift and duration of the cam right? :-) Does she "talk a little dirty" to you now? How aggressive is that cam you put in compared to stock?

The cam, pulleys, headers, y pipe, LS6 Manifold, magnaflow exhaust and dual valve springs and pushrods cost right around $2400.00

I didn't do any of the work, I had a shop in Manassas Va. do the work. The shop is Classic GT motorsports.

Additional parts and labor cost me another $3800.00 approximately. I needed to get new belts, ARP header bolts which are very important because the header bolts will tend to back out. Those bolts ran $121.00 for the set. Needed new altenator, fluids being oil and radiator. Dyno tunning of 3 hours at $120.00 and hour plus a $100.00 license fee for the dyno CD I got that has my tune on the CD. Also got a new idler pulley also gaskets. So once you start adding the additional parts to do it right it starts to get costly. I also had the cylinder heads checked and got my throttle body ported.

The numbers on the cam are the internal exhaust and external exhaust and lift and duration. The cam that I put in is not a very aggresive cam but it has a nice idle, not to rough and not to quiet. The 114 LSA means lope seperation angel. I do not know what that means but I think it has to do with how the car will idle. I got all my parts from LS1speed website and talked with the guys that sell the parts.

I will be taking my car to the track in the near future to see what kind of new numbers it will run. Hoping to run at least a 12.5 or better. I believe it will be possible if I launch it good and it isn't to hot.

Hope that answers your questions.

I just found out about piston slap a few months ago. Mine started doing the same thing and a friend who has done a lot of work on an LS1 camaro told me about it. I was very happy to find out it was nothing serious.

its normal for transams and pretty much any car with a ls1 i read in a magazine about piston slap a year ago in highperformance pontiac but its normal for ls1s but it goes away once the engine warms up
