Head Unit Install

Posted By: cochran191 On: 01-03-2008 @ 22:28:18         Reply | Edit
I searched and couldn't find a guide for it or a post about it. But i really need help installing my new sony cd player. I've never tried installing an aftermarket system in any of my cars but don't want to shell out the money to have someone else do it. Anybody have any advice or know of an illustrated guide that would help me out?

You should need a wiring adapter ($10), antena adapter($12), and a kit ($17) to mount the small radio in the large opening in the car. I know Autozone will have everything, but a place like Circuit City and Best Buy should have it too.
Everything should be pretty self explanitory from there. Your new radio should have some sort of labeling every wire, and so will the adapter that will just plug into the factory ends. The antena adapter will just plug in at both ends. The kit to mount the unit may be rather universal involving cutting off of extra parts on the piece that're not made for that specific car/unit.

I have everything but the antenna adapter. Will a universal one work or will I have to buy one that is made specifically for my car?

Ok, I got it in, the wiring adapter kit I bought had an antenna adapter with it and I didn't even know it. From a tape player to something I can finally play my Ipod on without having to plug 5 things in and change radio stations every 30 seconds.

With a tape player, you could have just used an old CD car kit for it, lol.

That's what I did on my Blazer before I replaced the factory CD player (it had both, the tape player is still in there but not plugged in to anything)

I don't even know if the tape player actually worked. The radio part worked but I never tried the tape player part. The guy who had it before me and an aftermarket system in it and took it out when he sold it. I had to clean up a bunch of loose wires. Not only did he take his aftermarket stuff though he also took the two speakers from backseat area. He left the amp but it's not hooked up because I don't know how to hook it up to the sony cd player i got.

Your new radio probably has 2 or 4 female RCA ends (round looking connectors with a hole in the center) out the back somewhere. Make sure 2 of them have some label like output or subwoofer, and run cords from that to the input of the other amp. There should be another wire from the radio with the label remote amp turn on or power antena, and that needs to go to the other amp. That other amp also should need its own power and ground that are likely thick wire.

Just as an FYI...

If you're replacing your headunit, expect all your factory speakers to blow out quickly if you listen to it at medium to high levels. The 4ohm head unit eats factory speakers for breakfast

When that happens, you'll need to buy aftermarket speakers, unless you want your system to sound like flapping poop forever

I bought a headunit, a amp, and a sub for my car two years ago.. I was hoping to be done at that point. Well all my speakers blew out and here i am $3000 later with a new system
